The Junk Rig community features a wide range of boats, rigs and ideas. We like to showcase one boat on a regular basis and are interested in hearing from any members who would be prepared to share some photos and details of their pride and joy.
December 2012 - Gary Pick's Redwing
Redwing, a Hartley Spindrift 24 built and owned by Gary Pick
launched in Tweed Heads, New South Wales, Australia in November. She's still got a few teething troubles, but everyone who's ever launched a boat can tell the same story, and at least 24' 6" Redwing is in her natural element. The project is very close to completion - and even closer now that the mast is up!
November 2012 - Brian Platt's High Tea
Brian Platt joined the Malayan Civil Service in 1952 and was sent to Kuala Lumpur. In 1957 Independence came, and Brian spent his leaving gratuity on a boat (Chempaka) to take him from Singapore to Canada, to live and work. They struggled as far as Manila. Brian then moved to Hong Kong and had High Tea (right) built.
She got him, in good shape, via Okinawa and Japan, to Eureka, California on Christmas Day 1959. By then an enthusiastic fan of the junk rig, Brian produced a highly-readable book about the voyages,
Parallel 40 North to Eureka. The JRA has acquired the remaining stock from Anthony and Colin Platt who published it following their brother's death in 1988. Read about High Tea here. You can buy the book from the JRA here, or download it at no cost.
October 2012 - Bill King's Galway Blazer II
Bill King passed away in September, aged 102, so we felt it appropriate to feature
Galway Blazer, his 1967 cold-moulded ply one-off. She was designed to carry this remarkable ex-submariner around the world.
Read what JRA members said about Bill and GB here and here. His books are listed on Wikipedia.

August 2012 - Ketil Grieve's Marie G
Ketil Grieve's Marie G (aka Norway's 'fjord flier') was rigged by amateurs at afraction of the cost of the racing machines against which she's now competing, andputting in some interesting performances.
Read more about her and see more of Arne Kverneland's pictures of this X-99 cambered panel junk conversion
here.
July 2012 - Michael Wood's Mariposa
Michael Wood's Contessa 26
Mariposa (formerly owned b
y Richard Burke) at the Plymouth (UK) 2012 Rally - her Hong Kong parrels (the diagonal lines at the front of each panel) seem to be keeping the cambered panels nicely in shape. You can see a couple of videos of her sailing
here. (Thanks to Peter Manning for this suggestion, Roy Denton for providing the image, and Peter Scandling for the video link.)
June 2012 - Leo & Yuki Folz's Tara

They'll be cruising her down the Rhein to Dusseldorf in September to the City Marina, Rotterdam. Leo says, 'depending on the weather autumn sailing will be at either Zeeland or Ijsselmeer.'
