Planning has begun for the annual New England Junket for 2019. The gathering will take place in Gouldsboro Bay, Maine, from Thursday, August 29 – Sunday, September 1, and will include sailing together, visiting, and sharing some potluck/bring-your-own meals. We have also been invited to once again join our friends Chubba and Bonnie at their annual Labor Day lobster potluck, together with about 60 of their friends, on that Saturday, August 31.

Last year we had a very good time, with about 20 junk rig sailors attending, five JR boats of various sizes, and another five boats with a variety of rigs all sailing together here in the bay.

On the water, there are good places to anchor for large and small boats, two boat ramps, and protected coves for small craft, as well as easy access to/from the open ocean about 4 miles down the bay. Shore access is available via a deepwater dock on Gouldsboro Bay. On land there is a campground on the tidal, well-protected shore of Joy Bay, at the head of Gouldsboro Bay, and a couple of bed and breakfast inns about fifteen minutes away by car. Grocery stores, restaurants, and boat supplies/hardware are also available nearby.

For more details, or just to let us know that you are planning to come, please reply to this post, or send an email to sailsec@junkrigassociation.org.

    We hope to see you!

Thank you for leading this charge once more, Shemaya.  I have blocked it out on my calendar and look forward to seeing everyone again.

You have a busy year in store, what with the R2AK and crossing the country twice.

    Hi Scott,

This is great news! And yes, the amount of stuff I have going on at the moment is really something… Looking forward to the junket, when theoretically the dust will have somewhat settled! It'll be great to see you and Lisa, and to hear all the latest.

    Cheers,

    Shemaya

Hi Shemaya, if work doesn't stop me again I will try to get up!  I bought a camper van in the last year so can do this!.

    Regards, David.

Shemaya here, writing from my recently changed position on the committee…

    New England Junket Updates

Our plan is expanding a little bit. When Annie heard about this she called it a "rolling junket," which I think is perfect. The rolling junket plan:

The original dates are still the main event: August 29 – September 1 in Gouldsboro, Maine, with lobster potluck on Saturday afternoon. Earlier in the week, some JR folks are planning to sail together in the vicinity of Stockton Springs, which is at the head of Penobscot Bay about 60 water-miles west of Gouldsboro Bay. Stockton Springs Harbor has a good boat ramp, as well as good anchoring. From there, it's possible that two or three boats – or maybe more? – will sail over to Gouldsboro, with at least one overnight stop along the way. Possible overnight stopover harbors could be Mackerel Cove on the north side of Swan's Island; Little Cranberry Island; or Northeast Harbor on the south side of Mount Desert Island. Timing will depend completely upon weather, and who is in the area when. Something to do with Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday (August 26-28) is most likely.

If you are interested in any part of the junket, please do be in touch ahead of time. It's possible to just show up, but it has happened in the past that we have missed people who arrived unannounced by land – if you make the trek to get there, we want to be sure to find you!

    Ways to reach us:
    posting a reply right here
    emailing me, Shemaya, at chair@junkrigassociation.org

There is an email list for New England junket news – just let us know if you'd like to be on it. We hope to see you!

    Cheers,
    Shemaya

There are no fees for the junket. This is a gathering of like-minded individuals, getting together to have some fun and share our common interest. As such, each of us who participates is responsible for our own safety and well-being.

    We hope to see you!

For those who may be ‘rolling’ into Stockton Harbor prior to Gouldsboro there are some choices available. The town has a couple of guest moorings. There is limited dockage for a dollar a foot. For anchoring the harbor is large with a mud bottom. There is a good launch ramp. The three year old Stockton Harbor Yacht Club also has guest moorings and dockage. I live up the hill and around the corner from the harbor.  A get together on the back deck for some grilling is an option.

Sounds like my sort of junket: people getting together casually at their homes and on board the boats.  I hope you get lots of people joining in.  It should be great fun.

Thanks to everybody who has been participating in scheduling discussions, we now have a New England Junket schedule!

    Early Junket

    Monday, August 26

Sail to Holbrook Island, anchor/mooring for Monday night
four boats are planning on this, so far (2 JR, 2 others)

    Tuesday, August 27
Depart from Holbrook Island approximately 0900, or earlier, eastbound.
Some boats will be continuing on; one will be sailing together for a bit and then returning to Stockton Springs on Tuesday; one boat may be stopping at Wooden Boat, in Brooklin, and continuing on in another day or two; another boat from Belfast may be joining at Wooden Boat, continuing onward together on Wednesday or Thursday.

    Tuesday night
Those boats going straight through to Joy Bay will anchor overnight, likely somewhere in the various anchorages at Swans Island: Mackerel Cove, or Buckle Harbor, or Burnt Coat Harbor, depending on conditions.

    Wednesday, August 28
Boats going straight through will sail on to Joy Bay, likely arriving by end of day.

To connect with any part of the Early Junket, contact Shemaya, email: chair@junkrigassociation.org or Luke, email: sailsec@junkrigassociation.org – ahead of time is best!
