New England Junket Updates

Our plan is expanding a little bit. When Annie heard about this she called it a "rolling junket," which I think is perfect. The rolling junket plan:

The original dates are still the main event: August 29 – September 1 in Gouldsboro, Maine, with lobster potluck on Saturday afternoon. Earlier in the week, some JR folks are planning to sail together in the vicinity of Stockton Springs, which is at the head of Penobscot Bay about 60 water-miles west of Gouldsboro Bay. Stockton Springs Harbor has a good boat ramp, as well as good anchoring. From there, it's possible that two or three boats – or maybe more? – will sail over to Gouldsboro, with at least one overnight stop along the way. Possible overnight stopover harbors could be Mackerel Cove on the north side of Swan's Island; Little Cranberry Island; or Northeast Harbor on the south side of Mount Desert Island. Timing will depend completely upon weather, and who is in the area when. Something to do with Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday (August 26-28) is most likely.

If you are interested in any part of the junket, please do be in touch ahead of time. It's possible to just show up, but it has happened in the past that we have missed people who arrived unannounced by land – if you make the trek to get there, we want to be sure to find you!

For those who may be ‘rolling’ into Stockton Harbor prior to Gouldsboro there are some choices available. The town has a couple of guest moorings. There is limited dockage for a dollar a foot. For anchoring the harbor is large with a mud bottom. There is a good launch ramp. The three year old Stockton Harbor Yacht Club also has guest moorings and dockage. I live up the hill and around the corner from the harbor.  A get together on the back deck for some grilling is an option.

Early Junket

Monday, August 26
Meet up in Stockton Springs Harbor
Sail to Holbrook Island, anchor/mooring for Monday night
four boats are planning on this, so far (2 JR, 2 others)

Tuesday, August 27
Depart from Holbrook Island approximately 0900, or earlier, eastbound.
Some boats will be continuing on; one will be sailing together for a bit and then returning to Stockton Springs on Tuesday; one boat may be stopping at Wooden Boat, in Brooklin, and continuing on in another day or two; another boat from Belfast may be joining at Wooden Boat, continuing onward together on Wednesday or Thursday.

Tuesday night
Those boats going straight through to Joy Bay will anchor overnight, likely somewhere in the various anchorages at Swans Island: Mackerel Cove, or Buckle Harbor, or Burnt Coat Harbor, depending on conditions.

Wednesday, August 28
Boats going straight through will sail on to Joy Bay, likely arriving by end of day.

arrive and settle in; visit at Shemaya and Suzanne's float? Get here by land or sea. Float is accessible by dinghy 0800 – 1230, it's mudflat after that, until about 1730… Chubba and Bonnie's float is accessible at all tides, for getting between shore and boats.

Friday, August 30
group sail in Joy Bay starting 1000, weather permitting, and hoping for breeze; afternoon sailing in upper Gouldsboro Bay

Saturday, August 31
1100 – 1500 sailing in upper Gouldsboro Bay, off of Chubba and Bonnie's float, weather permitting
1300 – 1700 lobster potluck at Chubba and Bonnie's (lobsters start going in the cookers about 1500)

Sunday, September 1
potluck brunch at Shemaya and Suzanne's? More sailing? Plans and timing TBD
