A JRA Member has asked me to post the following:

We have been invited to join in the Brixham Heritage Sailing Regatta Saturday 27th May / Sunday 28th May 2017 - www.brixhamheritagesailing.org.uk/ .

James Thomas sailed Ivory Gull in it last year and asked the regatta committee if we could all come too this year.  There is a firework display and Brixham Yacht Club will be open to all entrants in the heritage festival.  Please check out the heritage web site for details of what is an excellent weekend and how to book your place.

Brixham is home port for two junk rigged boats, Ivory Gull and Fly, who will both be there. It would be great if the JRA could be mob handed at this event.

Please address any questions to the contacts on www.brixhamheritagesailing.org.uk/

    Chris

Gosh, that sounds exciting.  I should imagine there will be lots of beautiful boats to ogle.  Wouldn't it be great if we gave the gaffers a great display with lots of junks to admire?  Two is a great start ... where two or more are gathered in the name of junk rig ... we have a junket!

I hear that Dennis and Dawn Shepherd of  'HUI-MAR' are interested in attending.

    Ted et al

May I suggest that the title above and in the Members' Events notice board should have the date included.

    Hi Ted et. al,

Junks and Gaffs - it's all too much for me and I've started to plan a long weekend away from Dublin to join you all. My boat will still be in the Netherlands so I hope to be able to join one of the other Junks, or a Gaffer if need be, just to catch some junkie photo-ops...

Looking forward to meeting you all,

    Barbara

PS Jonathan - good point about the title - am looking into it!

    Dear All,

Apologies for not writing earlier.  Our boat Fly was on the Harbour Authority's winter haul out site in Brixham (a public car park) and the crane comes for only one day to lift us all back in the water.  It can be a bit fraught as one remembers things forgotten on the to do list that should be done before launching.

Below is more information on what is an excellent event.

The Brixham Heritage Sailing Regatta held over the Spring Bank Holiday (Saturday 27 May 2017 – Sunday 28 May 2017) has its roots in the Sailing Trawler races that have been held in Torbay since the early 1800’s.  Revived by enthusiasts in 1997 and under the organisation of the Heritage Sailing Committee, the event will once again be hosted by Brixham Yacht Club.

The Regatta is not a race; it is what is called a Corinthian Fleet sail in company. Handicaps are applied to Classes 2 to 6, (Junk rigs of any age are in class 2) purely so that the Regatta Officer and their team can judge which boats have shown the best expertise and sailing skills during the afternoons event.

Entrants should send an entry and rating form before the start of the event so that the Time Correction Factor can be calculated.  http://www.brixhamheritagesailing.org.uk/entry/entry.htm

We sent our entry and rating forms for Fly and a cheque for £20 to the Heritage Sailing Committee today.

Entry fees include a Regatta Pennant, Collectable Mugs (maximum of 12 per boat), complimentary Fish Supper at the Yacht Club and free pontoon berthing in Brixham on the Saturday and Sunday nights, (this can be extended to Friday night if necessary).

    Entry fees 2017; Up to 18 Feet = £10; 18 Feet - 40 Feet = £20; Over 40 Feet = £40

More information about the Regatta from Penny Jolley, Secretary to the Regatta Committee

BOATS ENTERED/EXPRESSING AN INTEREST SO FAR Pilgrim, Vigilance, Nikia, Provident, Golden Vanity, Arriana, Erin, Tocobo, Minx, Syrinx, Little Tern, Mary Flora, Stardust, Iris, Our Daddy, Mayblossom, Ivory Gull, Fly, Theta, Hui Mar, Belladean.  If you know anyone else who is hoping to come please give them a little reminder!

Double thank you to those who have already returned their entry forms and entry fee. It would be very helpful to have as much notice as possible for both the harbour master for berthing and for catering requirements, so although there is no actual closing date for entries, obviously this is not totally practical and designed to help the odd boat or two who turn up out of the blue.

Please would you be kind enough to let us have your paper work ASAP.

    CREWS

I have a couple of people who would like to crew. If you have a slot let me know please. Otherwise I shall organise it at registration.

    POLO SHIRTS

Should you wish to order a polo shirt at £13.50 please let us have advance notice of:

    Woman's/Man's fit

    Size

    Boat name

All the shirts are offered in a lovely bright royal blue with this year's unique embroidered design, kindly provided by Toni Knights of Iris, in either a woman's or man's fit.

Payment with order please. Cheques made payable to Brixham Heritage Sailing and sent to Brixham Yacht Club.

    MUGS

We traditionally give away up to 4 Heritage printed mugs per boat (1 per crew member). Should you require more than 4 at a cost of £4 each please let me know.  Again, money with order as above.

    FOOD

Saturday supper will be a delicious fish pie, produced by Brixham Yacht Club.  Any problems with fish, again, let me know and I'll organise an alternative (with plenty of notice please).  Sunday night will be 'Sailing Suppers' to order at the bar; the committee is delighted to be providing you vouchers towards this in your goodies bag at the start of the regatta. Again we shall have to limit freebies if there is a crew larger than 4 - sorry.

    RNLI AUCTION

We have come up with some super auction lots, so come well armed with wallets and generosity! This will take place immediately after the prize giving on Sunday evening.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

Best of luck, Ted.  I hope you get a great turnout and wonderful weather.  I'm looking forward to reading all about it and seeing lots of great photos.
