Coramandel, Butterfly

Recently back from 10 days cruising the West Coast of Scotland. Although she is a lovely wee boat, and very capable, she does not fit my long term aims. Whilst I will continue to use her, if someone is interested please get in touch.

    £1,600.

The sail not old, generally in good condition.

Engine is a Tohatsu 5hp, runs very well.

There is a solar panel and good sized battery, also charges from the motor.

Depth sounder works, with speed / log which does not, but may just be wiring.  Navigation lights.

    Origo alcohol stove.

Presently at Kinlochleven, about 10 miles from Fort William.  An good base for exploring the West Coast.

    Hi Mark,

I am, in principle, very interested in buying your Coromandel and would be most grateful if you could let me have a full inventory before deciding whether to make the 560 mile round trip car journey from Yorkshire to Kinlochleven to view your boat "in the flesh" as it were. I had 12 years good sailing with a junk rig Corribee but have been without a boat for the past 4 years as she was sold due to pressure of work. Thankfully, I'm now fully retired and wanting to get on the water again.

    Best regards,

    Alan McKeand (new member)

    Alan,

I posted the add under the impression that junk rig boats can be difficult to sell, well it appears not so for a bargain priced Coromandel, you are the 4th inquiry.

When I sell depends somewhat on on other maters, at present I wish to keep her as a base until mid September, I am entered in a couple of hill running races, and Butterfly beats camping.

You are best to contact me directly. Click on my name to go to my contact details.  I will keep all posted if there are developments.

    Cheers Mark

An update and my reflections on Butterfly.

I bought her as she was available and ready to go for my summer trip. Ideally I would like something a little bigger, and most probably a catamaran.  A Coramandel is practically a one person boat.

That said she is a grand wee boat and served me well, the intention was to sell in the autumn, though with other projects on I may keep another year.

She does have issues/ areas for improvement.

Either a small doghouse or spray hood.

    Some form of vented heating.

Reorder the interior, one good berth by removing the sink.

Remove through hull fittings.  Make cockpit drains into the engine well, the cockpit sole drains / pools to the rear already.

Seal off the routes for water below the inner linings, particularly from the cockpit locker.

If keeping long term or doing a long offshore passage I would think about bulkheads and sealing storage compartments.

Some insulation/ condensation control would be nice, have just seen cork on a roll in B &Q.

Finally, and perhaps not last, give some fullness to the sail by putting tucks in the luff either side of the batten.

Experimenting with the sheeting, it does not set well when fully reefed.

Having bought a house in Kinlochleven, my time for a summer cruise is limited, so Butterfly is definitely up for sale.

Adrian Newth is now the new proud owner.
He was convinced by a lovely sail down Loch Leven tow Glencoe and back.

And not put off by me having to jump over the side in my birthday suit to guide us over the shingle bank to the muddy creek where she is kept.

I wish Adrian well and welcome him to the hallowed ranks of junk rig owner.  Which I have temporarily left....until the next project.

Well done to you on the sale Mark and all the best to Adrian as her new guardian.

Damn Scotland is beautiful. (When the sun shines.)

I feel very lucky to have been able to get a Corromandel which I'm sure will suit my needs.

I enjoyed my sail in Butterfly with Mark and the added entertainment. Great instruction and handy hints and tips......

Expecting some great sailing and adventures next year as, unfortunately, the remainder of this summer will probably be spent working.

    Cheers,

    Adrian
