    Parallel 40 North to Eureka, by Brian Platt
    Brian Platt joined the Malayan Civil Service in 1952 and was sent to Kuala Lumpur. In 1957 Independence came, and Brian left Singapore on a boat (Chempaka)  to go to Canada, where he wanted to live and work. They struggled as far as Manila. Brian then moved to Hong Kong and had High Tea built. She got him, in good shape, via Okinawa and Japan, to Eureka, California on Christmas Day 1959. By then an enthusiastic fan of the junk rig, Brian produced a highly readable book about the voyages, Parallel 40 North to Eureka. The JRA has acquired the remaining stock from Anthony Platt who published it following his brother's death in 1988. It is available now for members to buy.     I have just finished reading Parrallel 40 North to Eureka and can recommend it.  Brian Platt had a fine command of language and a keen eye for detail.  The result is a book of considerable literary merit, that gives the reader a clear portrait of a past era, both in ocean sailing and the last days of colonial empire.  He makes interesting observations about the characters he met and and expresses a personal philosophy that you may or may not agree with but which demonstrates a keen intelligence.  Like all good books it enriched my imagination and inspired me.

    No chance of it being offered in e-pub form is there?  I can't afford the postage nor the space for another book, without offloading an old friend!

    We're keeping a couple of library copies, and I agree that we ought to scan one and make an e-version available.

    I have just been in email contact with Anthony Platt, brother of Brian, with whom I negotiated first to buy a copy of Brian's book for myself, then to secure the remaining copies he had in stock for the JRA.  I copied the text of Graham's post to him and he was pleased with it, saying - "it's good to have your response and the nice comment from your JRA member. Sad that I can't pass that on to poor Brian, who would have been very pleased to read it."

    I contacted Anthony Platt (Brian Platt's brother) some time ago to ask if he'd mind if we scanned the book. The answer was no problem, but suggest we sell the paper copies first :-)

    Hi Roy, thanks for the offer, gratefully accepted. Our file size limit on this site is 25MB, so that would be a good aiming point. But if it needs to be bigger to get good definition in the pictures, so be it, and we'll find away around the storage problem. Looking again at Box, we can store file sizes of up to 250MB, so we can always store it there. I can use my pdf compression program to make a low-res reading copy.
