Stavanger, Wednesday
I have studied sketches of Slieve’s combined ‘spanned batten parrel/ downhaul’ . To me they are a real Columbie/Columbus's egg, doing 3 jobs in one go:
1. They clamp the batten close to the mast. Less mast tapping in a seaway.
2. More important, they lock the batten in a fixed fore-aft position - no need for luff hauling parrels or HK parrels.
3. They keep the luff taut, even on the lowest panel.
In my eyes Slieve’s Downhaul moves the whole Split Junk up from the "interesting but awkward" category to the "interesting and practical" category.
Bravo Slieve!
