Jeff, as an IT professional, I avoid Facbook like the plague and refuse to go anywhere near it. If your privacy is of any value to you, you'll do well to do the same.
Google+ however is with reasonable care safe and acceptable. This is because unlike Facebook, all defaults are set to private mode and you have to decide who sees which and what content you may want to share. So it is possible to strictly define your audience in Google+.
Face book however, the default mode is everything public with many of the settings obscure and/or hidden. It requires considerable effort to control your privacy in Facebook. They also change things regularly in ways the erase your privacy settings.
As for Twitter, I just fail to see the point of a 140 character message.
