    Denis,

Before you spend money, have you read Bill Belcher's Book, "Yacht Wind Vane Steering, How to plan and build your own"? If not, then I suggest you do as you will end up with a good understanding of the problems and the advantages of doing it yourself, as well as a good Wind Vane.

    Cheers, Slieve.

I'm going to build a wind autopilot http://www.hartley-boats.com/selfst.html

As a bonus - additional steering in case of breakdown of the main hydraulics

I suspect, like many other members, have and use both types of system. Not only to privide a degree of redundancy but because different situations have differing requirements and electric and wind power have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Thank you for the link! I'm looking for a longer time for an affordable alternative to Windpilot in Europe (beside Neptune).

That was my first summer sailing a new boat, Lian. Converted her to Chinese junk rig and used a second-hand prototype sail made of regular white tarp for testing it out. The plan is to sew a new sail for the next summer. So far so good!

On that video, we are out at Tallinn bay testing the self-steering wind vane that was installed on the very same morning. It happened to be a rather windy day with gusts over 15m/s, but we both were excited to see the result. From the very first moment, she worked superfine on every course we took!

Have a look at http://www.jesterinfo.org/ to see the Hasler SP vane gear that was fitted to Jester way back in 1960. Vane self steering has been closely associated with junk rig ever since.

Yes!! No different in that respect from boats with other rigs. What matters is reasonable helm balance, with a small but positive weather helm for as much of the time as possible, and that's as much to do with hull form and rudder and keel configuration as it is with rig type. Having said that, high aspect ratio junk rigs are generally easier to steer downwind, as the CE doesn't go so far out from the centreline.
