I was lucky to be in Carriacou when I was 7 (some time ago!)  We arrived by sailing schooner,  and saw one being built on the beach.   It is a reminder that I must dig out the old cine film, if I recall it did show both.

That sounds amazing, Pol - I hope they get a good turnout.

Somewhere I have some photos of one of these boats being built on the beach in the shade of the palm trees.  When I first visited the Grenadines in early '76, some of the trading sloops and schooners were still working under sail and a splendid sight they were, too.  I remember seeing them being unloaded alongside in Barbados.  They were fine boats and a delight to watch as they thundered along in the Trades.  Sadly, I doubt that anyone will carry on building them now.  They're probably not 'economic'.  How times have changed.

No, I'm not on the pay-roll!! (boatbuilder and JRA member Dan Johnson (Benford dory HESTUR) and I were involved in its UK premiere in Stornoway last year). But this is a film that not just sailors or craft-culture-junkies should see... It's being shown for only the second time in the UK in Boathouse 6 at Portsmouth Royal Dockyard on the 6th August (this Sunday) at 18:00. Tickets can be reserved at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/vanishing-sail-the-story-of-a-caribbean-tradition-tickets-36315223812

Vanishing Sail tells the story of soon-to retire Alwyn Enoe building his last boat with the help of his family on the beach - as he has always done - on the Caribbean island of Carriacou. The Carriacou sloop is a gaff-rigged working vessel, light and fast, few of which have been built recently. Vanishing Sail is filmed and produced by people who know these islands, these remarkable people and these boats, and who tell the story of hope and despair and joy. With an incredible soundtrack...

After you've seen it on the big screen (or if you can't get to Portsmouth) you'll probably want to get a copy of the dvd, recently produced, and available from the Vanishing Sail web site.

    I hope you see it!

    Pol.
