The last time I was in Horta I was denied shore leave having become 'socially confused' in our previous port of call...... I hope to make it ashore next time ;-)

A previous owner did an Atlantic circuit in her, some of which is recorded in old JRA magazines, I believe.

The list is pretty long and growing!  So far not too many surprises, but the usual suspects.. wiring, seacocks, windows.   The mast at first glance looked to be reasonable considering it's 40 years old, but on closer inspection needs to be replaced before venturing too far afield.

The site appears to be awash with Buddhists! As a Liverpudlian, on of my standard farewells (which my mother failed to beat out of me), is 'Ta -ra'.  Not inappropriate either, for a voyaging boat.  I can see your point about the name (isn't it supposed to be unlucky to say the word 'rabbit' on board?) - always a tricky one, that.

You sound to have the usual list of jobs on a second-hand boat, Peter.  I recall working my way through a similar one on Fantail before (no doubt foolishly) selling her in 'just add water' condition.  How are the keels, have you investigated further?  You are right to be concerned: I have seen two boats hauled out here with steel fin keels, filled with lead and the plating corroded right through.  Admittedly, the boats had obviously been left, uncared for on moorings for literally years, but even so ...  It's impossible to tell whether the corrosion came from within or without.  On the bright side - the lead hadn't fallen out!  But it sounds as though previous owners have been aware of the potential for problems and done their best to mitigate against it.

Tara - "Gone with the wind"?

Not intentional but a suitable association ;-)

Tara as in the Buddhist 'mother of liberation' ........

Having recently acquired and started work on my new boat, I thought I'd post updates here for anyone who might be interested.

The boat was previously known as 'Rabbit' and 'White Rabbit".  I've renamed her  being unable to live with either of these names.

A previous owner did an Atlantic circuit in her, some of which is recorded in old JRA magazines, I believe.  Unfortunately she has suffered some years of neglect and requires a lot of TLC to get her back up to standard.

    So far:

1.I've ripped out the old sea toilet, and begun the installation of a composting head similar in design to that installed in 'Weaverbird'.  Due to space restrictions I've changed it slightly.

    2.  Taken out a rusty Origo twin burner and the plumbing for the water and sink.

    3.  Removed and filled 4 seacocks.  2 from the heads and 2 from the galley.

    4.  Removed 2 windows to make templates for replacements.  The perspex was seriously degraded.  The new windows have been ordered and should arrive at the end of the week.

    5.  I've purchased a new water tank to increase capacity, new water pipe and a new whale pump tap.

But the big jobs are still to be tackled...... strip the anti-foul and then apply copper coat; repaint the topsides; the mast will need replacing but this is a summer project!

I'll put pictures in my album when I have a better wifi signal.

    Peter
