What a joy to sail a junk rigged boat again! Its been almost 20 years since I sold my O'Day 23 with its PJR styled flat junk rig. I just got back from my second sail with the new junk rig on my Compac 19, the Brenda B. It was a delight. On my first brief sail I had the sail set with far too much balance. I had set the mast position a little aft of what I had figured to be optimal and gave the sail a lot of baance without measuring. The amount of lee helm was disturbing but it was late and things had to wait. The next day the wind varied between 6 and 12 knots. Shortening the tack parrel and maybe moving the halyard attachment on the yard down closer to the center made all the difference. I don't know how many times I raised and lowered the sail setting different numbers of panels in the couple of hours I had. It was great fun. Tweaking the throat hauling parrel along with the yard hauling parrel allowed the 204 sq ft., AR 2.10 sail to set nicely. There still are things to adjust and make permanent. I'll post pics when I can.
This rig has been a long time coming. Over time I made a junk sail and did mast work for a Com-pac 16 but sold that for this boat. I sailed the 19 for a summer with the pointy rig then spent last summer and fall fixing up a house and moving by the coast, a short walk to the harbor, the perfect place for my mooring. Belonging to the JR Association and having members so generous with information here has made the conversion doable. Thanks to all, especailly Arne, I followed his lead and relied on his write ups and pictures so much.
