Hello Phil, my name is John and I've been quietly lurking on the JRA site learning as much as I have time to read ( too little).  I joined yesterday so that I could communicate directly with you.  I too own a Compac 19 that I would like to convert to a split junk rig.  I sail on the lakes near my home in Michigan and find that setting up the pointy rig takes more time than I would like.  I also love the ability to reef so easily.  I would really appreciate being able to speak with you on the phone about a million things. Thank you.

    Hi Phil,

What an intriguing idea! What would the mast height be like, to work for that sail? It's great fun to think about – thank you so much for bringing up the possibility.

Weather is supposed to clear up tomorrow – will you be out sailing??

For the 16 I figured I could get away with a mast a little over 19 ft. That allowed 3.5 ft for space below sail and for drift.  Cut to six panels at 113 sq ft it could be 26 inches shorter. I looked at the sail plan and the cord is 104 inches not 108.  It's tomorrow already and the sky has turned blue. Forecast is for NW winds 4-11 gusting to 17. Will definitely get out there and try to remember a camera.

PS When I was up your way a long time back there were a couple of moorings right off G Point Rd. by a local lobsterman' s dock.   It was NW of that Island with the cottage and spit that uncovers at low tide. I tied to an unused one then. Things change over time but could a mooring arrangement be worked out there to get Aulket back iin the water?

Shemaya, I still have the sail intended for the 16. Could it work for the Peep Hen? The CE should be at about 4.5 ft.  The sail is about 130 sq ft. AR 2.0 with a 9ft chord. It could, without too much difficulty, be changed from seven to six panels. It's my first attempt and a real amateur sewing job but you are welcome to it.  It's very light so I can easily mail it for you to look at or you could pick it up if you are over this way.

Phil! You've been on my mind – how wonderful that you're back on the water, with your new rig! I've been slacking, Suzanne and I settling into the new place. AUKLET still in the boat shed, but the Peep Hen in the water and testing out drying out on the mud flats. Desperately needs a junk rig!

Annie, thanks so much for sharing this – we are indeed right around the corner from each other, and had lovely visits last summer/fall. I've REALLY got to surface more often… Absolutely time for a junket!

Thanks Annie. Yes the JR provides a very sane way to sail especially for single handing, dealing with unexpected weather and keeping any less adventurous crew or guests feeling safe .  I'm not too too far from Shemaya and Auklet.  When I spoke to her last summer she mused about a junket.

I'll change my present posting picture of the O'Day to one of the Brenda B and add some others soon.

Well done, Phil: she's looking great.  I can imagine what a sigh of relief you gave to get back to sailing in junk rig.  The others just don't seem logical, do they?  I hope you have lots of fun with her this summer.

What a joy to sail a junk rigged boat again! Its been almost 20 years since I sold my O'Day 23 with its PJR styled flat junk rig. I just got back from my second sail with the new junk rig on my Compac 19, the Brenda B. It was a delight. On my first brief sail I had the sail set with far too much balance. I had set the mast position a little aft of what I had figured to be optimal and gave the sail a lot of baance without measuring. The amount of lee helm was disturbing but it was late and things had to wait. The next day the wind varied between 6 and 12 knots. Shortening the tack parrel and maybe moving the halyard attachment on the yard down closer to the center made all the difference. I don't know how many times I raised and lowered the sail setting different numbers of panels in the couple of hours I had. It was great fun. Tweaking the throat hauling parrel along with the yard hauling parrel allowed the 204 sq ft., AR 2.10 sail to set nicely. There still are things to adjust and make permanent. I'll post pics when I can.

This rig has been a long time coming. Over time I made a junk sail and did mast work for a Com-pac 16 but sold that for this boat. I sailed the 19 for a summer with the pointy rig then spent last summer and fall fixing up a house and moving by the coast, a short walk to the harbor, the perfect place for my mooring. Belonging to the JR Association and having members so generous with information here has made the conversion doable. Thanks to all, especailly Arne, I followed his lead and relied on his write ups and pictures so much.
