I will be talking this coming weekend to a local CAD company about what they might be able do for us. So far, the project manager is very enthusiastic about our ideas. Of course, cost is of utmost importance.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kwong, I will contact you by email to discuss your offer.

Heard that JRA is short of human resources. I would like to volunteer for 2D CAD drafting. I also have a draftsman who don't know sailing but can build 3D Max model and rendering from 2D CAD drawings. My wife Ruby can write AutoLisp program for 2D CAD parametric design. I am designing junk rig and like to have excel program for sizing of sails, mast height and diameter, distance between CLR on hull and CE on sail, etc. John Kwong

About the video game thing. I'm not suggesting that we need a video game but rather a video game builder could insert the specs for a boat and its junk rig into an already developed game and run a scenario which would be recorded for rerun. Most of the work has already been done for another purpose.  See for example of a simulated bombing run for a WWI aircraft within the game, “Rise of Flight” : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCGOuFiPmUc
    Amazingly realistic.
Imagine a boat sailing around a course alone, illustrating pointing, reaching and running. Perhaps reefing.
Food for thought. Until we talk with the people involved, we don’t know what input or costs are involved. They might give us a deal because it advertises their product.

My father flew an RE-8 in WWI. How is that, my father? He was 48 when I was born. I am 69 now.

You are right, I am rather busy right now with Elsie N but I can still do some initial reasearch on the subject and get back to you. In a few weeks, I will have more time. We have, at least, started the discussion. I will pass on my thoughts to date in an email.

I thought you'd be too busy sorting out your boat to take this on, actually.

I've rather jumped the gun by suggesting we co-opt you and you go ahead - obviously it all needs to be discussed in Committee.  However, if you're serious about this and know all the what, where and why of the technology, why don't you write me a little presentation giving an outline of the advantages that you see and how much it will all be likely to cost.  I can then circulate it around the committee and see what everybody thinks.

I can see the CAD idea working very well; I'm less sure about the 'video game'.  i feel we might be getting into big money there, with not that much of a gain.  However, if you send me an email with your idea in a way that we can discuss in the Committee Room, I am sure that everyone will give it serious consideration.

    Another thought comes to mind.

To supplement our CAD drawings, professional sketches by a marine illustrator like Bruce Bingham.

See: http://www.amazon.com/The-Sailors-Sketchbook-Bruce-Bingham/dp/0071550968 and click "look inside".

Bruce is a genius. His drawings and text are so clear and concise. It is amazing what he can convey with so little. You grasp his intent immediately. One one page with one or two drawings, together with text, he can portray a whole project/concept.

Just when I thought I'd made a clean get away.... Time to put my money where my mouth is, eh?

    Okay, sign me up!

    Hi Jim

Great to see you back posting on forum.

The JRA has plenty of resources, but is significantly lacking in one: Human Resources.  Believe me, your Committee spends a lot of time and energy batting ideas about (an average of 20 emails a day), but all too many of them founder for lack of any member to carry out the concept that is being debated.

You've got lots of inspiration, Jim.  I know that you also have lots to do.  But could I possibly persuade you to be co-opted onto the Committee to turn some of your inspiration into reality?

I would like to suggest that JRA consider investing some our resources in commissioning instructional drawings of the junk rig for posting to our files as well as online. I mean 3-D CAD drawings in an interactive format that viewers can manipulate. Rotate, disassemble, view in detail  etc. The software is commonplace now and it should not be difficult to find someone proficient to render drawings for us.
The drawings can be built up in layers so that individual systems can be seen, stand-alone. The sail, standing rigging, running rigging, battens; mast; flat cut sails; cambered sails (of different types). We can let imagination run on this. Lift illustrations from PJR and turn them into 3-D renderings. It could always be a work in progress, adding topics and illustrating developments.
Then there is animation. There are already sailing video games. A video game builder could show our rig under sail on different tacks, in full sail or reefed.

I think this would be a good use of resources because it would be such an improvement over the limited material we have now. They could go a long way to explaining our rig to a novice public in a form they can readily grasp.

This leads me to another topic, live video. I will post to a separate topic.
