Hey Jonny -  have been following this thread with interest.  I believe you are also in the SF Bay Area?  We have a Freedom 40 center cockpit cat ketch that we will be converting to a junk rig.  Would love to look at your project an lend moral and emotional support :).

That makes total sense …since the Storfidra is a Swede as well.

I was thinking they may be Anderson.

    Well…..I now have 4 I won't need! haha!

I will most likely leave the coaming pair in place for now …they could come in handy with The Jordan Drogue …if I ever , GASP …have to deploy it!

I was thinking one may make a nice "snubber" for the anchor rode …in lieu of a windlass.

    Hey Arne!

I noticed  in another one of your posts … a picture of your "snubbing" winch.

Do you know the make and model of the winch? I have 4 of them on my boat ….. and can't find a name or model number anywhere. They are nice ones!

    thanks,

    Jonny

They were popular on smaller Swedish boats of the seventies. I wonder if they are an early make of Andersen winch  -  I will make a check. Anyway they seem to last forever and I admit that I have never done any service to any of mine. That snubbing winch was picked from the coamings of my earlier boat, the Albin Viggen, Malena, where it had been used as genoa winch.

Great! Thanks for the info. It's , not like I am ever excited to climb my mast …but , it's nice to know I can if need be!

I will most likely paint as well…..just have yet one more barrier of protection.

The interesting thing is: I have chosen mild steel / galvanizing because of the much lower cost , but after doing my research , I've found that it's FAR stronger than Stainless….which is comforting!

    Jonny,
I don’t remember if I climbed that mast, but I can’t see why those thick chain links should not support my weight. As you say, the weld surface is wide (welded on both sides).

And yes, the paint is over the galvanized surface. Don’t ask me why  -  the galvanized  bits need not be painted. Still, if you like to do it, I suggest you start with a coat of etch-primer first.

Yes! That is very close to my idea Arne. I thought I'd cut off the ends of the links…so the two cut ends would be welded…but your idea may be better…MORE surface area to weld.

Would you say this is strong enough to pull yourself up??? I believe you have done this on this mast…correct???

Also, Is that paint I see…over the galvanizing???

I'm off to the store to buy a foot of chain.

    thanks!

    Hello everyone!!

I am back from London , played a GREAT show , met up with Robin Blaine and bought my Fenix sail!

I've also started the construction of the partners and mast step …and will be doing so for the next few days.

Annie! I have been saving all of  documentation photos in a file…and will upload them at some point …and possibly , take your advice , and write a article or two.

Right now I have ONE question for the group:

I have my partners , step and masthead fittings metal , cut out and bent ( tube shape) ….and ready to go to the welder…EXCEPT the masthead tangs.

I was going to just grind them out of flat bar steel….but , while wandering around the hardware store today, I ended up staring at a huge box of chain. 5/16 was the size.

What about a single chain link for each tab??? cutting the end of and welding the two ends to the cap????

It would certainly be strong enough ….I think?!?!?!?

The big question is: Is it strong enough to pull myself up the mast? ….without breaking????

    thoughts????

    thanks,

    Jonny

Agreed Arne. I'd like to be able to get up the mast if I need to. I spoke with a welder about an Aluminum cap ….and price wise … it is the same as Stainless.

I will most likely go the mild steel / galvanizing route.
