    Even with a low aspect ratio sail like the 'fantail' sail, you'll need at least 31ft. More, for the kind of sail that Arne is drawing, I think. All the recent calculations and empirical data are pointing towards 6in dia x 3/16in wall, or 150mm dia x 5mm, for this size of boat.

    I'm not sure, I think around 30 ft. I bought pjr and am trying to work through it all.

    Looks like a displacement of about 2500kgs. I know she is very tippy and feels a little under ballasted, so I guess I need to try to keep the weight down

    I believe the pipe is 6061-t6, but I will have to do some digging to find out if this is accurate since the warehouse here doesnt seem to keep the best records

    It depends of the boat's displacement. All I found was the Cheoy Lee Offshore 28 and that has a displacement of 8000lbs  -  3628kg.    For a real folkboat type, with a displacement of 1950 - 2200kg, that tube would be a bit on the heavy side since you would need another 3 - 3.5m of topmast.

    I found the data of that Cheoy Lee on this link, which shows an overview of many great cuisers.

    Greetings all. I've recently become the owner of a Cheoy Lee Frisco Flyer III (looks like a folkboat derivative?)  and I'm hoping to change her rig to a junk. She'll need a new mast, and I'm wondering how I should handle that. Arne and Annie's hybrid masts look interesting, and I was thinking about giving a hybrid aluminium/wood mast a shot.

     I can get my hands on a 21' (6.4m) section of 6" nominal (168.402mm outer diameter, 7.1mm wall) schedule 40 aluminium pipe for not much, but I'm wondering if that might be too heavy. Going by the astm standards, it looks like the pipe by itself will weigh in at 62.5 kg. Would it be better to just build a new mast in wood maybe?
