Fast boat next time, I promise!

Take a look at this one. A simple little Bernd Kohler trimaran with drainpipes for amas, first outing with an untuned (and not properly setting) junk sail.

On the plane and the joy is palpable.

Aargh - an error Neil:  mine, not Rael’s.  Sorry to both of you.  I thought I had sent him all the contents of the folder on my phone, but clearly not.  We have just re-issued the video with your contribution:  heres the new link https://youtu.be/FG2ABg-fnCg?feature=shared

We would still be delighted to have more self-introductions from members for a part 2!

Thanks for the work you put in. Well done. Only one criticism - I'd like to have seen that last clip a junk rigged boat sailing really fast . Anyway, great effort, I can imagine the amount of work involved.

Thanks Graeme, it took more effort than I imagined... But I'm happy I did it.

Fast boat next time, I promise! I have a pretty fast Proa that comes to mind...

    Keep Junking mate

Thanks for the material, you and Kevin filled the vid....

Well, I don't have any problem distinguishing between "discussing the merits" of something, and "promoting" it. They are not mutually exclusive, but they are different.

Anyway, there is nothing to say you can't promote the rig. It just does not state that as its aim. It says something different, and, I think, for a reason.

Back to videos and discussions about about the rig. Jan Cz just sent an email with a link to a very interesting video, in the form of a broadcast interview panel discussion in which JRA member Kris Krzysztof Matuszewski expounds on the subject of junk rigs. I wish I could comment but I can't speak a word of Polish. Have a look here.  Kris gives a presentation of slides and video clips.

I guess this is the sort of good discussion we are talking about.

    This is Kris' boat

Thanks to Jan for the link

[edit - after some fooling around I found how to get subtitles, in English. From what I could infer, it was an excellent presentation by Kris and also a great introduction to the JRA. Well done Kris.]

I think it is quite clear.

Whoever drafted the constitution seems to have been quite careful in his/her choice of words.

"Promotion" has a rather different shade of meaning when applied directly to the rig itself, with overtones of salesmanship and evangelism, and it is no accident that someone inserted the words "discussion of", I would suggest, precisely to steer away from that, and meet the very reservations that Arne has expressed in an earlier post.

Promotion of the rig is not precluded,  nor is disparagement, and as far as I can see there is nothing to prevent members from doing either.

But (rightly, in my opinion) "to promote the JR" is not stated as an aim of the JRA Constitution.

So, I rather like Arne's interpretation: to "promote gently".

Yes, I too like Arne's "promote gently" and will readily admit that my choice of the word "evangelise" was far too strong. I also agree that the wording of the constitution was carefully and wisely chosen re promotion. However, I think it'd be quite a challenge to promote discussion of the rig without mentioning its attributes, whereby one would surely be promoting the rig...

I read this carefully some time ago.

It doesn't say "...promote the junk rig...".

    The paragraph opens with:

3.1 to promote and encourage discussion of junk rig (JR),...

OK, headmaster, so that is ambigous,
    meaning either...

to promote the JR and encourage discussion of it

    or...

to promote and encourage discussion of the JR..

    Clear as mud?
