Kingfisher 30 junk sloop conversion

    I have a KF20+ but I'm speculating to get something a bit larger sometimes in the future. I find KF awesome and was wandering how would a KF30 look like as JR sloop....now I know it!

    In addition to Arne's advice, some experience from Ilvy:

    We experienced this wide boom tack end sweep arc once, and the tack end got under the guardrails. After the first second of panic I sheeted hard in again to free the boom. Afterwards I shortened the mast lift by just enough to keep the boom tack end above the guard rails, with a bit of buffer for wavy conditions. During the junk rig conversion I did cut the mast about 50 cm longer than calculated, so I had plenty of space to raise the sail geometry (the increased top weight is obviously not affecting Ilvy's performance too much.).

    However, it might be interesting to simply remove the forward guard rails instead of raising the sail. In our past cruise we never (!) had to leave the cockpit at sea, only for docking and anchoring.

    Jonny, yes, I think that rig should work. I have sketched in a bigger rudder (0.28m2).  I struggle with understanding what the designer was thinking when he fitted the original, at only 0.18m2.

    Another thing: the tack end of the boom will sweep over a wide arc with such a hi-balance sail. To make sure it will not catch the guardrails, I guess one has better making the mast about 20cm taller and raise the whole sail accordingly.

    First attempt.
    Now, instead of solving a sudoku, I had a go on drawing a sloop JR for that Kingfisher.

    The mast  position will keep that pole between the berths. To get best access, I suggest shifting the mast 100-150mm to sb.

    I am now harvesting from the knowledge about increasing mast balance, which Paul Schnabel has provided us with during his experimenting with his Maxi 77. These new and tested findings have been a game changer. 

    Note how the distance from the CE to the mast has been reduced, giving easier steering downwind.

    just sent Kevin an email.


    I did look at the “free” one on Facebook marketplace yesterday. 
    I’m not afraid of a project , but that one was too far gone for me.

    Hi Jonnie, there are 2 K26JRs for sale at the moment - the one in the Azores is offered by one of your fellow Americans and the JRA chairman, Kevin Cardiff, has one near Dublin. 

    I agree - a single mast would suit a K30 well, but I've no idea where to find a tapered aluminium pole here nowadays.
