OCC Jester Medal

    Does the nominee need to be alive?  Is the medal purely to recognise voyages achieved or to acknowledge contribution to the art of the single-handed sailing?

    Certainly Roger seems to be filling both catergories with his vogayes and writing.

    OK, I went to the OCC website. It appears that the Jester Medal has only been awarded since 2006. The recipients have been:

    2006 Pete Hill
    2007 Sir Robin Knox-Johnston
    2009 Roger Taylor
    2011 Mervyn Wheatley

    With Sir Robin Knox-Johnston going pretty far back, how about Bernard Moitessier for his voyage as part of the Golden Globe race and the many other single handed voyages that he made. He, through his voyages and writing has undoudtedly contributed to "the art of single-handed sailing" in a big way.

    I realise he is a Frenchman and the OCC is a British organization so it may stick in their craw a bit but facts is facts and Bernard was an exceptional seaman.

    No, the OCC Jester Medal is not connected in any way with the Jester Challenge.
    Simply "for an outstanding contribution to the art of single-handed sailing".
    The award was made to Mervyn Wheatley in 2011, and no award was made in 2010.

    I've been asked by the Ocean Cruising Club if I have any ideas for nominations for their  Jester Medal, "for an outstanding contribution to the art of single-handed sailing".
    It was awarded to Pete Hill in 2006, for his performance in the Jester Challenge, amd to Roger Taylor in 2009 for his voyages in Mingming, so junk rig is well represented (as it should be for the Jester Medal).
    For my money, Roger Taylor could get it again, for his voyages in 2010 and 2011; but who else would be a worthy nominee?
