    Chris,

there is as much information as given in the JRA database.  The idea is to fill it out more as further information s recieved.  I am assiming it does not just have to be members boats, any useful data is worthwhile.

As someone planning an aluminium/wood mast it would be very useful to have information on wall thickness for alloy/steel/hollow wood masts. I realise I'm coming to this a bit late, but perhaps some information on this could be included in future additions to this useful resource?

    Robin,
I've just added that construction to fore, main and mizzen masts. Please let me know if it looks OK now.

I'll update mine... the rig isn't complete but the masts are in.

You can email me at my address listed in the member's directory, or I can just send you the info, however this is presently working.

Since we've had no further feedback, in order to keep this moving I've uploaded the latest file to Google Drive as Paul suggested and have given Mark and Paul the link. Let's call it the ball.

Paul, the ball is in your hands now as you offered to correct your data. Please use the latest file - the date is in the filename. Change it when you've done it and let me know here, thanks.

If anyone else wishes to update their entry in the database, please start a queue by posting your email address below; obviously you'll need a Google account to join in. Thanks. Mark's original file can still be found via the link in the above post, but please don't edit that file as it's no longer the latest. (For anyone not in the know, Google Drive is an online file sharing system a bit like Box except that you can edit a file online, i.e. you don't need to download it first.)

Mark, thanks. I've made the changes you indicated and have also moved carbon and grp masts into their own sections. Hope that's OK. The latest file is here.

What do you think about making the database accessible for members to edit rather than just download? Paul suggested a Google doc which is doable, but (i) there's a time overhead in giving people access to a Google doc (ii) some members hate Google with a vengeance (iii) there's the risk of it perhaps getting messed up. Let's think this through rather than jumping in quick - it's the first time we've tried a collaborative job like this.

Historically members aren't too hot at keeping boat info up to date (me included) so I don't think a request for everyone to check their mast data against the database would be a runner. Perhaps best for a couple of people to share the work of say every couple of months checking the database against members' profiles. Views? Volunteers?

I have tried to condense the information so that the whole can be seen more easily.  Schooner and Ketches, the 'area main', should read 'sail area',  with each figure giving the size of each sail,  ie 35 & 50m2.  I did not get around to doing the same for the masts, though here perhaps only the main mast is needed.

Anyone wishing specific information on a boat would be as well to check the original data base.

    Look forward to comment.

Brian Kerslake wrote:Mark has now sent the Mast Database. It's an Excel file which can be downloaded  hereMany thanks, Mark.

In his email he said, "It's a first draft for comment. I suspect that I may have lost some information, as I found it all too easy to 'cut' then 'paste' instead of  clicking 'insert copied cells', which deletes the line above. As more information is received it can be filled out."

Mark, could you comment on how you dealt with schooners?

Members please add your comments below, or email Mark. If anyone wants to help him with this project, ditto.

NB The database can be downloaded by non-members. Does that worry anyone?

I suggest that the spreadsheet be posted in Google docs and then members can edit their own entries or we setup a corrections thread (here maybe?).

Just looking at the entries which are my own work, I see many errors (not a criticism, just a fact. I appreciate that when you do not know the boat(s) involved, it's easy to have errors).

Over and above the above remarks, thanks to Mark for taking the time and making the effort to get this going. Just tell me how to get corrections in and I'll send mine.
