    Hello everyone!

    After a lot of thinking and grungy boat work …I have decided that it's a little too overwhelming for me to have TWO sailboats . The problem is … I love them both!  But ….alas , I am going to put my  newly acquired North Atlantic 29 back up for sale. This way I can concentrate on finishing up  (and actually sailing) my C-Mist 32 .


    I figured I would throw this out to my fellow junkies here first before doing a proper listing on the net.


    As some of you may know , I recently purchased Dave Chamberlin's old boat "Pelican" . She  has a lot of projects to complete , but she is an incredibly solid boat …and very , very well built. You can see one of the sisterships  , Yacht Teleport in action here: http://www.yachtteleport.com  

    Chris and Jess have done some fantastic voyages on a cold molded version of this design.


    After spending the last few weeks aboard , cleaning her up and taking stock , it appears that Dave was right in the middle of a complete refit when he sold her. Some gear is only partially installed …meaning not wired up yet and never used.


    The boat is "geared up" very well : Wind Generator , Sailomat 3040 wind vane, GPS , Chartplotter , all wind/speed sailing instruments ,a new (uninstalled) 20 gallon fuel tank, 35 lb. CQR knockoff anchor with tons of chain, miles of spare line , a never used $3000. Maxwell power anchor windlass , 2 gorgeous Anderson self tailing winches ,and even has a "Hasler-esque" clear plexiglass dome for one of the round hatches …VERY COOL! 


    I have the tanbark sail partially rigged (just need to do the parrels) and it and all battens are in fine condition.


    The Volvo MD7a (13 h.p.)was partially taken apart , and I  , along with some mechanical help , deduced that he was cleaning out the cooling system … pretty common on these. I just spent the last week cleaning and putting the motor back together with new gaskets. She spins freely and has great compression ….but ….now the starter is frozen from sitting so long and needs a rebuild (the starter)


    She needs a haul and new bottom paint.


    Dave cut out half of the starboard settee to build a proper galley …so , there is a big hole there. The new bulkhead is already cut ….ready to build to suit.


    a few days of work sorting the engine …and she will be out sailing , another month of sweat and elbow grease …and you will have a fine , junk rigged vessel that can take you anywhere in safety , comfort and style.

    Jonny, one very good feature with that MD7a is that it can be hand-cranked to start it, if the handle is there, and there has been made room for it to swing it. I suggest you try it.  Having an engine which can be hand-started is a big advantage as you don't need to get neurotic about battery state.

    C-MIST? Samson C-Mist, ferrocement?

    Hi Arne! Yes the motor has the hand crank ….and I have been trying …and trying!

    I recently had shoulder surgery so, I'm trying to not to push it too hard!

    The C-mist is made from Samson's plans , but it's made of fiberglass. It's the only glass one I've ever heard of.

    Jonny,

    first of all, when trying to hand-crank a diesel, is to be dead sure there is no air-bubbles in the diesel pipes between the injector pump and the injectors. If you crank with the decompression levers set, on some motors, at least, one can hear a sort of click or "trrr" noise each time the injectors fires. If nothing can be heard, it may be an idea to bleed the pipes. The thing is, if you are able to swing a diesel over the top with some speed and with compression on, it should fire quite easily if the temps are above 50 Deg. F..

    PS: The motor is easier to hand-crank if the generator belt is off. At least, don't  set the "ignition " on or the generator will want to generate power, which makes cranking heavier.

    Consider push starting..... ;)

    Back when we bought our boat I spent a day trying to get our new-to-us Sabb started only to realize after much work that I had the throttle all the way off and it was suppose to be all the way on.  These days the Sabb and I exchange respectful smiles and she starts right up.  Arne is correct - air in the fuel line is your enemy and usually the first thing to check out.

    We have a squeeze bulb in our diesel fuel line - it is much easier to prime the system with it  than using the usual lever on the mechanical fuel pump mounted on the engine.
