I think the  taper  between the mast and the partner on our boat - it is in the fiberglass deck/mast partner - is such a minimal amount it is almost not visible.  But the amount of compression that the urethane wedges take on as they are pushed down is impressive. We also have a deck collar - see image below- that gets bolted on to the deck, around the mast.  It does not contact the mast but serves to both hold the wedges down and as a great place to attach halyards and any other running rigging.  BTW, our wedges are about  75mm tall, 20mm wall thickness.

Hello Eric, Which company makes this deck collar?  All the best, Mark

    Thanks Erik!!

There is very little … if any taper , right where the mast goes through the partners.

y plan is to put a few temporary 1 x 1" wedges in to hold her steady …until I install the motor in a few weeks.

THEN …I will be able to align the mast with the boat more or less trimmed properly on her water line.

Casting the Smooth-On or another product seems pretty straight forward …once the  mast is properly aligned.

The work you are doing looks really great.   Is the mast tapered at the deck level? If yes, that makes the poured urathane wedges work really well in sealing and keeping the water oout.  Some of the cat rigged boats I have been on cast the partners in a single piece if there is a taper.  In any case,  You consider something to hold the partners down and keep them from working their way up while sailing.

Ah …. that's fantastic Annie! Thank you. Things are moving along nicely: The step is now in place and the partners and steel "collar" are now installed … I just need to "strategically" paint the mast … meaning …it's horizontal , on top of the boat.

Then …dress the mast …and she'll be ready to pop in.

I tried to upload some photos …but it seems I'm having WiFi issues tonight.

    Coming soon!

Well, for what it's worth, it looks very much like the partners I fitted to Fantail, which have shown no signs of movement, yet and we've done almost 4,000 miles together.  I can't see any reason for another layer of woven roving, personally.

HI everyone!! Sorry for the lack of updates here ….I have been VERY BUSY!

I should have my mast in in a week or so!!!!

I have one question: regarding glassing in my partners:

You can see a picture of it in my files under "Storfidra 25 junk conversion"

I used 3 layers of 3/4" plywood , generous fillets , and then used a wide fiberglass strip over the fillets before adding 2 complete layers of fiberglass cloth …and then 3 layers of thickened epoxy.

    IS THIS STRONG ENOUGH????????

My thought is: yes …but my neighbor just came by to scare me ….and said I also need a layer of fiberglass roving.

    What do you guys think???????

    thanks! more pics soon!!!

Hi guys! Thanks so much! … And , good luck with your conversion as well!

Actually , I just moved the boat (by truck) down to Marina Del Rey . So, will be continuing the conversion here.

I am awaiting fittings from the Galavanizer , and then it will be time to prepare the mast.

    Very exciting!
