    just a quick answer. Yesterday I uploaded the planned new sailplan for my IF, Ingeborg. to 'my' page. See under sailplans, here:

    The total length of the mast will be 9.7m, quite a bit shorter than an IF mast, I guess, and maybe even a bit shorter than that of a Contessa 26, I don't know.

    The mast is planned to be a hybrid aluminium and spruce job (The joint can be spotted on the sail plan).

    The lower aluminium section will be a 6m long tube, 150 x 5mm, made of 6082-T6 alloy. The top section will add 3.7m (plus 60cm inserted into the tube). This will be reduced to about 90mm diameter in the top. I have started to produce a write-up about the hybrid masts, and use the mast for the IF (and for Frøken Sørensen) as examples.

    i am new to the group and plan to shadow your next project.  I too am in search of a IF to convert to JR.  They are not that plentiful here in the US and I may have to compromise with a Contessa 26.  

    I am initially interested in your mast selection.  Same height above deck as existing bermuda rig?  Lamp pole, flag pole or wood?

    I didn't realise that the Marieholm had been 'tuned up'.  In that case, she should be quite wonderful to sail - fast and handy.  A joy.  She looks very nice inside.  I'm sure you'll find it hard to go home at the end of a day's sailing.  Once she has junk rig, of course!

    that would not be fair to the Contessa 26. Remember, the Marieholm IF is slightly up-tuned compared with the Nordic Folkboat. The Contessa, on the other hand, has been detuned to make her a roomier cruiser than the original folkboats.

    Some dry numbers:

    Nordic Folkboat:
    Displacement=1930kg
    Ballast=1025kg (53%)

    Marieholm IF:
    Displacement= 2150kg
    Ballast= 1250kg (58%)

    Contessa 26:

    Displacement=2449kg

    Ballast=1043kg (43%)

     

    Their junkrigs will be quite similar, but the fact is (and often forgotten) that no rig can sail faster than the boat it has been attached to.

    I don’t write this to put the Contessa in a bad light, but only to point out that the IF is closer to The Ultimate Sailboat. I measured the cabin’s headroom of Ingeborg the other day: The resulting 139cm give hints about a cosy interior...

    After selling my 3 ton Johanna, my hunt for a smaller all-weather keelboat resulted in buying a Marieholm IF 26, a couple of days ago. Although a bit heavier than the 1500kg I aimed for, I still think I will be able to handle her much more easily than Johanna. She will only need a 6hp engine, at26kg(Johanna’s 9.9hp, 50kg), and only 35sqm sail (Johanna’s 48).

    Some basic dimensions:

    LOA                       7.86m
    LWL                       6.05m
    Beam                    2.25m

    Draught               1.21m
    Displacement    2150kg
    ballast (iron)      1250kg (58%)

    Mainsail (Bm)    16sqm

    Genoa 1              19sqm

    Working jib        10sqm

    This summer (2014) there will be little to tell about her. I will only do some sailing in her with her original Bermuda rig. The plan is to convert her to JR in the spring 2015. The rig may end up looking about like this. It is a downscaled version of one of my master sails (AR=1.90), shown in chapter 4 of “The Cambered Panel Junk Rig”, found on “my JRA page”.
