Thank you Mr. Hermann-Hueber and Mr. Cardiff, very helpful information. I will try my best to do my due diligence.

    Thanks,

When I purchased my current boat, imported into the EU from Canada, I was required to have it certified for EU purposes (to obtain the EU certificate of conformity).  The consequences of not doing so were that the boat could not legally be bought or sold in the EU. I do not know the circumstances of your prospective boat, but for me this was almost as expensive as the VAT bill.  So something else to check.

There may be an untold problem importing a ship (no matter of what age) to the EU. Following the rules a non EU boat requires CE certficate when imported to EU.

You can check out with the new owner of Wave Rover, who had to go through the whole burocracy importing the canadian ship to EU.

Maybe better ask customs and other officials in your country. Could save a lot of hazzle.

    Regards, Thomas

By coincidence the European Commission has just issued a guidance note on all of this, here

    Hello,

I intend to purchase a junk rig on the market (more of that a bit later) and since I do not think I have enough experience for a North Sea crossing yet, I am seeking an experienced skipper to help me sail her from Norfolk coast,UK to Netherlands in either of the last two weeks of July. I will be onboard as well. (This is the tentative plan for now, subject to changes as needed).

Since it is a UK registered boat, I will need to pay the EU duties on arrival in Netherlands as the boat is eventually going to be registered in Sweden. So any experience of dealing with EU entry and duties etc. is welcome. I will provide more details on an email. Obviously the kind skipper will be remunerated properly. Kindly reach out at aniruddhay[at]gmail[dot]com.

    Thanks in advance,

    Aniruddha
