I have tragic news of the death of Tom Wallace, a highly respected former member of the JRA, in a hit and run accident on 29th December. He was on foot and was hit by a Mercedes car driven by an unlicensed and uninsured driver who escaped on foot with a passenger. It appears that Tom, who was 89 years old, was carried for almost a mile on the bonnet of the car and despite attempts by a local postman and other residents, died after emergency services were called to the scene. The driver and passenger were later arrested and are now remanded on several charges. Another arrest in connection with them was made at an address in Chatham where a cannabis farm was discovered. Attached is a BBC report of the incident. I am most grateful to Geoff Turton, a former JRA committee member and long time publicist for the JRA at Boat jumbles around the UK, and to another former JRA member, Andrew Bailey, for letting me know of his awful news. I sailed with Tom at UK rallies on his boat RAM III and found him a very kind man and a very competent sailor, he will be sorely missed.
