I've admired the Coin Series too, and MacNaughton's realist ideals. Living in a strip-planked hull as we do, I think there's reason to recommend them.

[Beside us in Whangarei, New Zealand, is a nicely refurbished Vertue for sale. A good candidate for conversion to Junk Rig, I reckon, she'd be one already-built alternative, related to MacNaughton's lovely boats, as an ancestor, perhaps. Carvel-planked, simply set up with almost no systems, and a hand-crank Bukh 10 engine.

I'll put a note on the Board, so as not to sidetrack this discussion.]

    Cheers,
    Kurt

Always liked the Sovereign design (but 3-4yrs minimum is just too long not sailing). Linnea is a Crown Jewel 36, with some good information:

I have contacted both Tom Mac' and Alan Mcbride with regard to the 'penny' design, in the course of my search.  I think it is fair to say that the two do not have the best client/designer relationship.  Tom's suggestion was to look at the build site of a couple building a 'crown jewel' design, for an idea of structure.  Alan was happy to answer my questions.

I am curious if anybody out there has any experience with this design?  Tom MacNaughton is adapting the design to aluminum, and as an ex merchant marine officer, that has a lot to recommend it from my perspective.  Can anybody provide any firsthand experience?

    Thanks.
