A dimensioned drawing of the 209 sq ft sail is now in "David's Doodles". It could be made in a straightforward, flat style, or it could have up to 6% camber in its lower panels, as on Fantail.

Jeff, lest you missed it, take a look at my recent posting here which contains Blondie Hasler's info on rigging and sailing a Kingfisher 20. The text therefore assumes a 20 footer rather than a 17 footer but the info will be useful. I would echo previous comments about getting hold of Practical Junk Rig - essential. Cheers.

I scaled down the Raven 26/Fantail sail to 209 sq ft/19.42 sq m, and got a batten length of 4 metres, a yard length of 3.1 metres, a boom length of 3.8 metres, a mast height above deck of 5.8 metres, and a distance between the mast centreline at the deck (the mast is raked forward 6 degrees) and the bow in the range 1.2 - 1.4 metres, depending on the Centre of Lateral Area of the Silhouette (which I don't know).
    David.

    David,

Thanks for the information, I am good at making thinks, but not at working things like this out.

    Regards   Jeff.

HI, Help. I am trying to work out  how to junk rig my  boat, & getting lost in all the jargon.

Where do i fit the new mast ?.

    How much sail area ?.

    What sail plan.

I need it to be very easy to use.

    Hi Jeff,
You'll need at least to borrow a copy of Practical Junk Rig, the book that we all keep referring to. It contains every last thing that you need to know to design, build and sail a junk rig. That will tell you about the factors concerned in positioning the mast.
I see the the Silhouette mk3 has a sail area of 209 sq ft in her main + genoa, and that would be a good starting point.
Having sailed Fantail several times now, I'm very pleased with the way this design has worked out, with the forward raked mast and fanned sail. I would favour it for all boats up to about 28 ft. Photos in the photo gallery, and a sail drawing in "Your online file storage/Drawings/David's doodles". It can be scaled down to 209 sq ft very easily, if you like it.

HI  David,  I will look into that now.

    Many thanks  Jeff.
