Boat and mast design software

I just tried the mast calcs using Wine on Linux[1]. There seems to be a handy Wine bundle for Mac as well, I'd recommend checking out http://wiki.winehq.org/WineBottler.

The software mentioned in the OP are now found here: http://carlsondesign.com/software/add-ons/shareware

BTW, Delftship (I'm running the 32-bit 6.22.253 Free version at the moment) works perfectly with Wine on Linux, even if installing it requires a bit of hacking (you have to extract the .msi installer from the .exe and probably something else I've forgotten). I'd guess it would work as well on Macs.

If anyone needs help with setting up Wine just ask and I'll try to help the best that I can.

Here are screenshots of the mast apps:

edit: here's a screenshot of the Sailform app: http://i.imgur.com/9GKwKAt.png

[1] I had to install vb5run and comdlg32ocx using Winetricks for them to work, but from the WineBottler link it seems as Winetricks is available for Mac as well.

Hear hear! I used Delftship to design the tender that I'm building at the moment. Not a great test for the software but it's a very handy bit of kit.

Some members may be familiar with the hull design program ‘DelftShip’, which is very useful for creating 3D hull/superstructure designs, and producing developed panel patterns assuming the hull has developable surfaces, as in the case of hard chine hulls.

I have also found it useful for evaluating sail designs, permitting 3-dimensional visualisation and checking for measurement errors, inconsistencies, etc., before committing to sailcloth. The 3D visualisations, including masts, spars and battens can be rotated, scaled and examined from all angles. It will also produce high resolution panel patterns from which measurements may be accurately and precisely made using the mouse/cursor and transferred directly to the sailcloth (I haven’t tried this yet).

I have placed an example of a DelftShip visualisation of a sail design in my profile folder as an example. Note that this is not a sail design program as such – the sail will have to be designed on paper or in a drawing program first, and the relevant measured data points then transferred to DelftShip. Note also that it’s only really useful for visualising sails made from flat panels – traditional flat sails and, as in this case, using the angled shelf foot to achieve camber. I used Slieve’s guidelines for producing these shelf foot cambered panels in PaintShop Pro. I guess sails using the ‘barrel cut’ could also be entered, but the process
would be very much more difficult, flat panel patterns would be difficult to produce, and it would probably not be worth the effort.

DelftShip is a very useful and powerful 3D hullform modelling program and is available free here. Windows 32 and 64-bit combined installer. I have found it also runs perfectly well under wine in Linux.

    Sailcut 8 isn't 64 bit compatible :-(

Sailcut 8 version : 10 May 2007 supports VanLoan style sails as well.

    cheers

Sailcut8 works under Wine in Linux. In my opinion, it's a waste of time. If you are interested in anything but the Hasler/McCloud sail geometry. You cannot for example do a van Loan shaped sail.

Yes, you can download it - but you can't open it on a Mac, because it's a .exe file.

Whilst browsing for something else, I came across this:

    Shareware for Boat Design

        * Download our free Hull Designer , a simple, interactive, visual 3-d hull design Windows program for modeling and developing panels for hard chine construction. Find Center of Boyancy, Center of Lateral Area, Length Waterline, and righting moment (pitched or heeled) among other calculations. Create patterns for stem, stern, bulkheads, up to 10 chines, and up to 8 frames for construction. Includes a 3, 4, or 5 sheet nesting and hand-plotting capability and output to VRML 1.0, DXF, HPGL, or Carlson plotters. Includes sample designs and Word 6.0 manual. User Gavin Atkin offers a tutorial. Includes Atkins Oarmouse plans and Ed Bachmann's Excel tool.
          Hull Designer

        * A pair of free mast design programs for round wooden masts - one to develop strakes for round masts and another to calculate mast size and strength for stayed and unstayed rigs based on sail area and wood types. The second program is by Robert Tyrrell.

        * Link to Carene 40/50, a shareware boat hull design program for plywood or sheet metal construction by Robert Laine.

I can't open them, they are not for Mac, but if you use Windows, you might find them useful. Can someone report on whether the two mast design programs look good?

Also note, further up the page:

SailCut4.09 is an excellent sail design program by Robert Laine, linked to Carlson Design hardware. SailCut4 cross-cuts Marconi and gaff sails with simple and robust 3-d shape control (user manual). SailCut6.10 is for asymmetrical spinnakers, defining the flying sail in 3-d rather than just 2-d (user manual). Other programs allow spinnakers to fly away from their over-simplified 2-d outlines. SailCut8 is for junk rigs and batwing sails, and SailCut5 is ready to cut windsurfer sails on your Carlson Design plotter/cutter.

Again for Windows. Can someone look at "sailcut8", please?
