SibLim 38, anyone?

The enquirers had seen Tystie and liked the accommodation layout, but needed it stretched lengthways, and upwards, to make it a more relaxed fit for six-footers. When I described the size of project that building a 38ft boat is, in manpower terms, it became clear to them that they'd better just dream about building. It really does take a full-time team of at least two, preferably three, people to build something this big within a reasonable timescale.

Yes, I'd keep Tystie's general layout, but there would be no need for the settees to overlap with the central double bed. Also, I'd reduce the size of the nav desk to folded-chart size, as electronic navigation is now prevalent, allocating more room to the heads.

Fascinating, David.  I hope someone is inspired to build her.  Would the accommodation be a bit like Tystie, but with maybe more separation between the saloon and bunk? And, I assume, more headroom.  There seem to be a lot of tall sailors about, poor things ;-)

The steel plate on the bottom makes sense - one would be a lot more confident drying out with that.

What sort of rig do you have in mind for this version, David?

A standard PJR schooner rig of about 90sqm, the area split anywhere between 45/45 and 60/30. The foredeck has enough bury for a 12m mast, so that range of possibilities should be OK.

Well, Tystie is CE-marked 'Cat A, Ocean'. This version of SibLim should be equally capable. I'm thinking of just a 25mm steel plate underneath, to take the ground, with internal ballast of lead ingots, but there could be more of a stub keel like FanShi if more stiffness and sail carrying power were desired.

A JRA member has asked me about the possibility of designing a "Tystie 38", to give maybe 10% more length to the cockpit, galley, saloon and bed. I said no, I'm not capable of doing that, but I could design a SibLim variant at 38ft, just by applying different scale factors to the x, y and z axes. Here are some images of what it might look like, at LOA 11.5m, DWL 10m, beam 3.8m and draught 0.75m at design displacement of 7.5 tonnes.
