    Good day all,

I like to use old fire hose as chafing protection between mast and spars, mast and battens, etc.  Recently we were searching at all the local fire departments for old hose, hoping for about 20 yards of 5" diameter hose for Persephone.

Well, when it rains it pours.   A friend at the Baltimore FD said "sure, we have hose...we condemn it all the time."  Well, we now have 7 full rolls of the stuff, many diameters, and it comes to about 400' total. Plus one roll of 10" that he mysteriously called "Feeder Hose".  Last time I saw something like that, it was on the FRONT of the pumper truck and looked necessary.  I have a feeling Lieutenant Baltimore cleaned out the city's surplus stocks. But that is Maryland, and this is Virginia, so we are OK with it since raging fires can't cross the Potomac.

    Well,

I know many of y'all are across the Pond, so to speak.  But if anyone happens to be doing the Intracoastal, Chesapeake, or heading NE fleeing hurricanes, feel free to drop anchor here in Virginia and help yourselves to some pieces, and even some spares. There is enough here for the whole Royal Navy. However, the last time THEY were here, they shelled the place and burned the capital.  No need for gunnery this time...it is FREE.  Plus, if you burn the capital we will need that fire hose.  Consider this the surrender notice.

Hi from one of us across the Pond, John. Pity we're so far apart - I could use some of that hose. I'm still trying to figure out how best to stop the alloy battens etc tapping on Paradox's carbon fibre masts. Maybe you could mail say 20 metres? Just make up a parcel with the right number of stamps. Or else - we still have one or two ships left.

    Hi John....
I'm down on the lower Chesapeake Bay....Mobjack Bay....North R.  I'm almost finished with my temp. sails so maybe I'll see you out on the bay!

    Heya Brian,

I am going to look into inexpensive mailing methods to send you some...the US PS wanted an insane amount (no wonder they're going out of business)

I was joking, John. I just couldn't justify shipping that stiff across the pond, either moneywise or ecologically. Nice idea though :-)

Hope you get to rendezvous with Neil - could be the first JRA rally in the USA!

A rally would be fun.  Just sailing Sea Elf again would be really fun!!  John, I've placed a few pictures in the members photo album.  My temporary sails are almost done.  Had a problem with my sewing machine while working on the foresail.  Also need to make battens.....

What material are you going with for battens?

Hi John.....good question.  Since my 'sails' are temporary until I find out if the shape is right etc., I'm thinking about using something 'that will work'.  Like the sails, I don't want to invest a lot of money into something that may need changing.  There are many places here in Mathews Co. where folks have bamboo growing.  I may see if they'd like to part with some.  But I think I'll just buy some spruce or something similar for them.
