Hullform might help.  http://www.hullform.com/.  There is a free version.  It is windows based, but there is information about Linux on the Hullform web page.

    Regards,

I think I will eventually get a PC as this would appear to be the simple solution.

I happened to install VirtualBox on my Macbook Pro the other day. Was smooth trouble free installation, and free, then I installed Windows XP which I had lying around the house.

If you don't own a Windows CD, usually the cheapest way to obtain one is to get a shrink wrapped disc (for new computers) from a shop. Is about half the price of the retail disc.

edit:  I now have Hullform running on Mac (thanks Ted), hmm..  who needs naval architects now..
