This African is seeking A Junk

    Greetings all.
After lurking for months I recently became a JRA member.
Extensive research has led me to the dream of sailing worldwide on a junk rigged vessel.
In this regard I ask for the help of JRA members in finding the right blue water boat.
Here are a few of my wish list items.
    1) Good sail away condition requiring little work if any.
    2) Steel, ferro or GRP hull in that order.
    3) Between 32 and 48 feet.
    4) Separate aft cabin would be great.
    5) Enclosed steering position a huge plus.
    6) Ability to accommodate crew on longer legs.
Wherever she is it is likely that I would want to bring her home to South Africa and may need some help on that voyage.
Perhaps her present owners would enjoy a final adventure?
I will also consider the conversion of suitably priced vessel to junk rig.
I have a readily available budget of up to ZAR 500k but for that special boat I may sell off some cattle to boost the kitty :-)
Thanks in advance for any and all help and advice in this search.

I too have been stalking the boards eagerly watching for boats to come on the market.  Although I am not in a position to retire yet and don't live near enough to a coast to be able to enjoy the benefits of a boat right now I am hoping in a year or two I can make a move and then get a boat.

As for hull material preferences its all over the place everyone seems to have a different favorite.  Personally I am leaning towards GRP hull just because I feel it is easiest for me to maintain/repair.

Here are some of my favorite junks that are on the market now all are blue water boats in your size range:

    32ft Sunbird

    44ft Mango Moon

    33ft Catamaran - Pete Hill's Oryx

    47ft Ron Glas

    Hi Hans-Erik'

have a look at yachthub.com which lists just about every yacht for sale in Australia and New Zealand. There are a lot of very good cruising boats for sale at reasonable prices and if you want it rerigged as a junk you are very close to Paul Thompson in New Zealand who can do it for you at a reasonable price.

All the best in your search, David.

    Hi Chad
Thanks for your reply. I know of those vessels.
The Sunbird is impossible to track down as the broker does not reply to emails and I read (maybe even here on JRA) that she may have some questionable issues.
I was very far advanced in discussions with the owners of Ron Glas but they are no longer willing to sell her unless I wait till they are ready to let go of her and they cannot tell me when that will be.
A pity. The history lover that I am and mostly solo sailor that I may be for some time (barring a fortuitous encounter with someone in the future) had fallen in love with her and she was even sailing toward me from Europe :-(
I am currently in discussions with the broker on Mango Moon on the insistence of her owner.
Pete's Oryx at US$59k is a little too hectic. In ZAR terms that is around 850k.

    Hi David
Yes I have regularly been scouring yachthub and have a few candidates in my research files.
I am already in touch with Paul after reading about his talents here on JRA.
La Chica was built in South Africa.
I know she is sold but was Arcadian a ferro boat?

    Hi Hans Eric,

Arcadian was a balsa core fiberglass construction not ferro, the addition I did at the stern was solid timber core with glass over.

Hi, Hans-Erik, sorry about my lack of communication, typing can be a problem. Mango Moon has dropped in price to $49900 AUD. You may have seen the ad in this month's JR magazine.

    Regards, Nev.

    Howsit,

There is a lekker junk rig moored right by me in the Durban marina that fits your bill.

She's within your size range, GRP, center cockpit with small aft cabin, Schooner Junk Rig.

I looked seriously at purchasing her but she needed work and was bigger than what I was looking for at the time (2014) but she eventually sold for under zar 200k to an old couple in 2015 or 2016. If you're looking for a boat like that and you have 500k + to spend then I would definitely keep an eye out for her as she's the only Junk on the east coast.

The vessel is called Langsyne and she has a very interesting story.

Attached is a photo of a file that seems to contain the original design for her rig.

    Hi Hans-Erik,

La Chica is a solidly built 32 feet steel junk schooner. She is ready to cruise anywhere with pretty much no work at all and fully equipped for blue water cruising.

She fits well your description. However, more than 3 crew on longer legs would be stretching it. Maybe a bit small for your liking? On the plus side, she is probably one of the most solid, safest small vessels afloat.

She is now in New Zealand, but the idea of delivering to SA is tempting!

I will post a detailed add very soon. Price will be close to 60k NZD ono (550k ZAR).

    Cheers
