Is anyone selling, or know of anyone selling, a junk rigged boat around 30' length, preferably within UK, or maybe northern France?  Looking to buy my first boat, aiming eventually to sail mainly single-handed around UK waters and to Europe, maybe even to Canaries, etc.  Bilge keel is attractive, although any format considered.  Any suggestions gratefully received.

    Regards,

    Roy Denton.

    Roy,

I know you were interested in China Moon. Did the deal fall through?

Have you considered buying a standard boat and converting? It's no big deal, you'd gain really useful experience and you will get all the support you need from the guys (and gulls) here on this forum.

    Hi Paul

China Girl needs a fair bit of work to reinstate the interior accommodation as well as the outside of the hull.  I was happy to take that on, but felt the price needed to come down further than the owner was willing, so I am back in the market.

Converting an existing rig would be exciting, but as my first boat I would find that a bit daunting.  Not only that I'm keen to get sailing experience sooner rather than later (having left it later in life to start sailing in the first place).  China Girl would have allowed that - the interior work could have been tackled piecemeal once the hull was done and in the water - not sure how easy or quick a re-rig would be, especially as I live well inland, remote from where the boat would be moored, and from sources of materials.  Also my funds aren't limitless (whose are?) so it is a balance between condition and price.  The cost of a new rig would limit what I could spend on a boat up front, which would then perhaps constrain me to a boat in poorer condition, needing more expenditure in other directions.

Thanks for the offer of assistance - I kinda knew that would be available from previous traffic on here, but it's good to have it confirmed.

    Regards,  Roy.

Sorry to hear that China Girl has fallen through...  Yon owner must be a wee bit daft not to compromise with you: selling a scruffy boat in a time of depression is never going to be easy.

I could suggest you start your cruising by coming down to New Zealand, which would get you well on your way!  I have a friend here selling a 'hermaphrodite' junk (stays and jibs) for NZ$26,000 about 12,000 quid - certainly very affordable.  Only 26 ft but he's been up to the islands (as we call it: Tonga, Vanua'atu, etc) several times.

I feel you may hesitate about this so hope that maybe Robin will be able to find you what you are looking for.  Why don't you contact Pete and ask him when 'Pelican' will be for sale - she may be affordable.  A bit on the large side but I'm sure she'll be well set up.

    Hi Annie,

Thanks for the thoughts.  I want to be careful what I say on here, as the seller is a JRA member, although I don't think he accesses this site, but people might know him.  We were within £300 of a deal, but I couldn't justify spending any more in view of the further spending on renovation.

I am tempted by the idea of starting in NZ, but the oncost of the trip might be prohibitive!

Pelican may be a little large for me, and a quick scan on Google shows Freedom 33 boats for sale in the £35k region, which would be too much.  I'll send Pete an email to sound him out.

    Hi Roy

My old boat's for sale - Sunbird 32 schooner junk 'Matanie'. The guy bought here off me in Portimao, Portugal and moved her to Almerimar, Mediterranean Spain. Doesn't look as if he's done much to her, and she's way overpriced. Be happy to privately advise what he paid for her. The link is:

Hi Roy,  I've just taken advantage of a remarkable opportunity and bought a 32ft junk schooner. My junk rigged Kingfisher 26 Antares is therefore for sale. Maybe not quite the 30ft you'd like, but she's a capable little ship and has been across the Atlantic and south of the equator ( under her old bermudan rig).

I've recently converted her to junk with a carbon mast, 380 sq ft sail with cambered panels following Arne's ideas almost to the letter (the sail is blue!). She is fast, weatherly, well balanced and a joy to handle. In short, a much better ship than she was before.

She's lying in Chichester harbour - come for a sail.

    Regards, Asmat.

PS I'd like to show a picture but don't have any decent ones yet and haven't a clue how to send them to the website.

Hi Roy. These might be too small. (You don't say what typical equipage you might have.) But for pottering your coasts? The prices and appointments sure sound reasonable.
