    Aim
To continue the digitisation of the JRA Library

    Skills
Advice, organisational, proof reading, testing on digital devices, uploading to and listing on the website.

    Background
Robin Blain is the custodian of our Reference/Lending Library. Many of the books would be difficult to replace. Edward Hooper has already organised the digitisation of some of these, and would like to get some more done, and seeks advice from 'techies' who know the ins and outs of digitisation re quaility and what formats would make sense/be used. Digitisation will mostly be done by professionals.

Thanks Lesley. But no volunteers to help Edward with this project yet.

Some of you must have advice you can give? That's all Edward is looking for; I believe he'll be doing the legwork.

    Questions:

    1. How many books do we have where copyright issues permit us to digitise them?

    2. Do they need to be fully digitised? Or just scanned to decent quality pdfs?

1 The answer can be found on our Library page. Count the number of books that can't be downloaded. That's how many are left to do.

2 Depends on how much effort and dosh the JRA wishes to spend on this. Some would be happy with simple pdfs. Some would want (particular) e-Books. Which? Edward posted a while back to ask people to help with that decision. I can't find his post right now, but I don't recall anyone answering. I'll ask him to say more here.

Do we not have copyright issues with those books - many are quite recent?

Not my territory, Chris. I've asked Edward to bring you up to speed on this.

    Short answer is Yes.
Long answer is we have to find out who has the copyright. Author or Publisher?
Then we have to locate the copyright holder and seek their permission.
More to follow. (travelling in Spain at the moment).

Edward, always start with the publisher as authors move around. The books should include a Copyright statement and the publisher should be happy to advise and provide details.

Perhaps we could set this up as another Member Project, i.e. ask someone to take on the job of chasing the copyrights, leaving you or whoever to organise the actual work. You could do that here or set it up as a separate thread in this forum.
