I have received another email to my Outlook (ex Hotmail) account demanding money with menaces (the stupid threat to send porn videos to all my contacts) and quoting my password.  The password they quoted is the one I was using on the JRA website (since changed).  I had previously used it on Hotmail but not for more than a year.  I have run a full scan on my computer which brought up no problems, and have changed every password I use.  As Annie notes, the wording of the spam emails makes them easily detectable, at least for most of us.  I have an elderly friend who was asked to send $1000 to a friend stuck in Spain and did so without checking.  Obviously they catch enough gullible people to make their pathetic enterprise worthwhile.

In the meantime the warning stands.  Do not open any unexpected emails from me with attachments.  I doubt they will send anything, though.  It is my money they are after.

David, I think it is a genuine post, but the original poster made it "sticky" so it stays at the top of the summary list.  This can only be done by an administrator and has probably been done by accident.  It is annoying in that the sticky item can mask newer posts in the summary list if you are not careful to look down the list, and so think there have been no newer posts since the last one on the sticky item.

Maybe it's just on my browser, but a post on largest junk rig has remained at the top of the forum list since 13 Apr  despite other topic postss having been made after it.

I use Gmail and I didn't get anything like this.  But such a weird approach would normally make most people sit up and take notice.  Wouldn't it?

At times like this, I'm glad that I've ditched my gmail account (I quit hotmail many years ago) and turned over to https://protonmail.com/ secure email based in Switzerland.

I don't get any of this kind of annoyance.

I received the email requesting a favour too.  I immediately sent it to my junk archive, as I recognised the language as being fraudulent, but the name niggled.  Looked it up on Google and up came a well known person, but that did not answer why the name was familiar. I was therefore interested to see this thread.

I have also had trouble with my Hotmail account in the last few days.  I had a message from someone saying they knew my password (they did, though it was an old one) and if I did not send them US $1900 in Bitcoin within 24 hours, they would send porn images to all of my contacts.  I forwarded the email to the Outlook phishing team, which is what our fellow member should do as well if anybody can contact him.  Yesterday, I found I could not get into my account as the password was not accepted and I had to reset it.  It appears someone had changed it.

If anyone gets a suspicious email from me with attachments, do not open them!

Sometimes I just want to run away to sea!

PS;  I change my passwords once a month but it does not always help.

Did any of you look at the headers? In particular the reply-to might be interesting.. but the lowest Received: will at least give a part of the world where the message originated, maybe the ip of the system. It would be ok to post that here so people can check if their system has a virus sending spam.

Thanks all - looks like we don't have a number for him.  My best hope is that the same scam emails will have gone to family or close friends, and at least one of them will be on the ball and phone him to suggest changing his hotmail password.

Meanwhile I've edited my posts to remove his name; I don't think it serves any further purpose.

Me too.  Just emailed him with details.

Me too. Got the same pair of emails. Deeply suspicious. I felt like asking whoever it is to send me evidence it is him, but I guess they have probably scanned this site already. I don't have his phone number either.

Sorry I cannot help as Iain has not give us his phone numbers.

I contacted John Gosling - who seem to be the closest member in Scotland on the chance that he might have the number.

    Regards
