A  ribbon type, DIY-friendly wind indicator

Yesterday I test-sailed a new wind-indicator I made. It was so good that I produced a little photo write-up on it  -  you know me…

I have sent it for proof-reading, so in a few days I will upload a better version. That one will anyway be found under this link.

Edit at 20180521: The hopefully final version has now been up-loaded.

I just uploaded Part 2 of Junk Rig for Ingeborg to 'my' page here. It is about how I made the mast step and partners. I mean to send the text and photos to the Magazine editor as well.

Any comments are better done on the Ingeborg thread.

See the direct link to the Part 2 below:

Thank you for that Arne, I found myself leaving the helm a fair bit over the weekend and that would have been very useful.

    A simple tiller brake

As it rained today, I spent a bit time at the keyboard producing this little write-up about a tiller brake I use on my boats.

Luckily, Slieve had a quick look at it and helped me with some details. Still, he cannot be expected to make good English of it, only precise enough.

(..there was something about a silk purse from a sow’s ear, wasn’t there?)

    Cheers, Arne

PS, 3.July. Let's try this link - yes, that seems to work  -  there are more than one way to kill a cat!
It actually points at the file I have stored in "my" folder on this site. If you go to "Arne Kvernelands files" and look under "How-to notes" you will find the link, presented in a different way ("An easy to make tiller brake"), with a shortlink under the heading.

    Nice write-up, Arne!

The hat is also very stylish, and very oriental!

Designing a cone-shaped mast coat for Ingeborg.

A couple of days ago I made the pattern for the mast coat for Ingeborg. Now, every time I do this, I seem to have to re-learn how to calculate the shape of the cut-off cone sides. I have therefore made an instruction, mainly aimed for myself, to hopefully make it simpler next time.  I did it in English, in case some of you would like to use it, as well. I put the write-up under How-to notes on my page:

A Fan-up preventer, FUP, for Frøken Sørensen

A couple of days ago I finally got around to making and trying out a fan-up preventer (FUP) for Frøken Sørensen’s sail. I wrote a note about it, with diagrams and photos.

If you look up the 1.2MB PDF file “20140830 Making a fan-up preventer under Other Technical articles  at

    http://www.junkrigassociation.org/arne

    or try this short link:

If you want to make a comment, could I suggest you jump to the “Gybing a Junk" thread?

    Cheers, Arne

Yes, 'The myth of the bad tack is another example of junk rig not doing what you would expect.  I spoke to someone about a year ago, who has sailed on truly traditonally-rigged square riggers and he explained it all to me.  Sadly, while it all made perfect sense at the time, I find I can't explain it as he did.  That's the trouble with being a bear of very little brain :-(
