    Shemaya,

Will you have a supply available for purchase in person at the Messabout this year?

And for everybody: the Junk Shop has now been updated with burgee and house flag info. That can be found by scrolling down here. Thank you Mark!

Thanks very much Shemaya and Annie for your replies. I'm sorry I wasn't aware of the debate regarding the design of the burgee, or the existence of a house flag proposed or otherwise, but I think they both look great and, simply because of its size and loud message I'll be ordering a house flag as well as the burgee! We fly our burgee at the masthead. The freedom from shrouds gives us the choice of an ensign staff or flying a flag from the peak of the top sheeted batten. Our ensign staff is reserved for the red ensign, so that leaves the peak for the house flag on high days and holidays. I think it'll look great there, although I'm not sure of the etiquette regarding flags flown from the peak. I suspect it should only be the ensign. But if you already fly your ensign from the ensign staff, the peak is "available" for fun!

I'm off to put in my order. Thanks to all those who worked to keep up the supply.

    Pol.

We tend to be rugged individualists around here, and I for one would like to see that represented in the flags we fly.

You don't like the "official" house flag offering? Make your own. You have a split junk or other variant? Put it on your house flag. Make it in your boat's colours. Add your boat's name. Whatever.

But I do think that there should be just the official Association burgee, when flown at the masthead.  Keep the individualism for display elsewhere.

    Hi Karlis,
Came across a little harsh there! It's interesting about flags – so many people have so many different feelings about them, and their design. The committee tried for input from the membership, when working this out, but of course it's easy to miss those notes.

I do like the versions you have come up with also. We had to get a big batch (100) printed all at once, so the ones we have will be going for a while. But it would be great to keep your design on file. Maybe we could also include that version in the "JRA graphics" section of the Junk Shop, depending on how everybody (including you) feels about it. If you might like to send me graphics files – transparent, if you do that easily – that would be great. (chair@junkrigassociation.org)

As for the house flag, anything with bright color is going out on a limb. As is attempting to respectfully acknowledge the Asian origins and current practice of junk rig in a flag. Perhaps this could start a good discussion, especially including thoughts from Asian JRA members. Appropriate acknowledgment, or cultural appropriation?

Thanks for the feedback, Karlis, and for coming up with ideas!

I banged up a few alternate JRA burgee designs last month, so here's some unsolicited opinions. Respect for everyone's work on this.

The white one with the tiny logo looks alternately like a bermuda mainsail, a surrender flag, or nothing at all. I'm not for departing completely with the design and JRA history. Nothing wrong with the white but it needs to be somewhat remarkable at a distance.

I'm not sure about the red-and-gold square there, it's quite a departure from anything I've seen associated with the JRA, the colour logo, the website and the newsletter. It has a bit of a kitch chinese restaurant feel, maybe would pair well with the Charlie Chan font and fake Chinese names seen on a lot of junk rigged boats.

I didn't believe that we had a mandate to change the burgee too dramatically, so I left it pretty much as it was, but brought in a tad more colour.

As for the house flag: kitsch?  Yes, it probably is.  So are a lot of things that bring fun and pleasure to life: fireworks; candlelit dinners for two; a full-on production of Aida; for that matter: small boats wearing lots of flags.  You don't have to buy one; people who have done so seem to like it: it brightens up the junkets that it's really intended for (we've had a couple of these flags in NZ for about 5 years) and it's harmless fun.  A stickler for correct etiquette will wear the burgee on a stick at the masthead, of course, and it would be nice to see that, but a lot of people are much more casual around flags, these days, and just want to add a bit of colour and frivolity to their lives.

(The original logo had a Charlie Chan-style font, by the way, but somewhat more attractive.  Unfortunately, none of us working on the logo managed to track it down, so we had to make do with the ubiquitous Comic San MS.)

I've been to both UK and NZ online shops trying to obtain a JRA burgee. So far I've not found one. If I am wearing the OGA burgee again next time we cross tacks with WEAVERBIRD I can expect trouble! And quite rightly - it is high time we had one: to fly the flag for the association as well as the pleasure of having one to hoist. I hope someone can point me in the right direction. Then we can go cruising with a clear conscience! Thanks,

    Pol.

In this modified burgee design the diamond is much larger, and in one version is much more prominent. I really like the logo element of the sail with blue with red second-to-top panel, I think it's distinctive and recognizable, and could be made the most of on the burgee.
