    Hi Andrew,

if the engine is OK you could Island hop in relative safety down to Mackay, it is only sixty odd miles. I am sure that they would have sufficient facilities there to get the work done to get her fully seaworthy again, after all it is a large seaport serving coal ships and supporting the mines.

She looks as if she could be worth the work and will make a nice junk rigged cruising boat.

All the best with the project, David.

The boat was hit by a cyclone in arlie beach qld it was de-masted and roughed up a bit, being 6mm if it is only surface rust then there is plenty of wiggle room.

problem 1. arlie beach is in woop woop , i would have to move there and fix new masts and make sails etc. or somehow get it moved. not likely.

i have spant last 6 months welding and painting 2pac at a yacht club here in sydney, so i have learnt a little about metal. I can weld ok and am not afraid of steel any longer.

previously I worked in wood mainly as a builder and sometimes crafstman. wood is nicer to work with, but metal is way more flexible, ie you can weld a short length on to a piece of steel. you cant always do that with wood.

i have been using norglass 2pac waterproof marine coatings.

rust is technically a color not what is called corrosion or oxidation. but any way

    i

Caution! Steel boats rust from the inside out. If she looks like this externally, she may be beyond help.

    Hi Andrew,

one of the things about owning a steel boat is that you have to keep after the rust, you can not put it off or it gets out of hand. It looks as if she has been let go a bit so will need some work to get back. The first thing is get back to white metal and see what the actual damage is, make repairs as required and then immediately protect with new paint cover. I use a rich zinc primer as the first coat and this seems to stop any rust in its tracks so that you can get the harder upper coats on with no rust underneath. The trouble with the rich zinc is that it is soft. Anyway it looks like a worthwhile project.

    All the best, David.

the guy sent me some photos of 40'er and she does have what looks like a fair bit of rust... he thinks its not so bad... of course.

he said its 6mm hull. prob mostly surface rust. but i reckon there is a bit of welding here and there.

he will take $8500 so its worth a couple weeks clean up, I'm guessing a couple grand in paint, lets say 4-6k clean up. brings us back to asking price...

I have asked for better pics. so we shall see

    Hi Andrew,

have you seen the 40 foot steel Adams for sale on Gumtree? Ad# 1207651306 located in the Whitsundays. She is a long keel fast cruiser and just begging to be junk rigged as the mast is out and needs new rigging. She could suit you very well, and only $12,500.00!! She does need a small amount of rust repair, but with a steel boat you are always going to have rust repairs.

    All the best, David.

I saw that 40ft Adams about a week ago David.
At about ZAR 125,000 if she was here in South Africa I would be writing the cheque today.
When I wander around the net I really come to the conclusion that I live in the arse end of the world when it comes to boats for sale. :-(

    Hi Andrew,

it is a steel boat so you could weld on a couple if high aspect bilge keels with end plates. It may need a bit of internal reinforcement to do this, like a steel channel welded between a couple of frames and to the hull plating, but then you would have a beachable boat that would remain upright for bottom cleaning, antifouling etc. They could also be designed to be extra fuel tanks!!

The dory design still has a keel and will heel to about 40 degrees when beached, so will still need legs or bilge keels or a really big flat end plate on the keel to remain upright when beached for maintenance.

    Just a thought!!

    David.

i think id like to use said crutches. lot less drag. fuel storage is interesting.

I was looking at the Colvin 50' schooner, very nice boat, very simple, brutal almost, but honest. easy to see where everything is. im sure if i was holed up somewhere for months on end, i would value the extra space. especially if there was another onboard. it has this great cabin on the back that looks over everything. is 50' too big? i guess out on the ocean its very small. it wont fit down the canals of france.

spot on David, yes I have been eyeing it off! I am hoping for is a boat I can beach. I see many fiberglass boats with raising keel and hiked up prices, and I hear the Dory design beaches well due to hard chines and flat bottom. and i know you can build a post or leg to support pretty much any boat. All it all it could be a good cheap starter...
