    Hi everyone,

Rivale is my boat, thank you to who ever posted it initially. It would be amazing to see it with a junk rig. I would be interested to sail on it after the conversion to experience the difference. The response to Rivale has been good so far so hopefully someone will snap up this sweet little boat soon.

Quite a few professional seamen could knit, I am sure, since I know that boys learn(ed) to knit, sometimes. However, I am not among them, so this mast jacket was made by a good friend of mine. She is an eager knitter and hobby seamstress as well, so when I wondered if she could knit a simple coat, which could be buttoned onto the mast, she of course had to make it with a fancy pattern, taken from the district of Fana, sitting right south of the Bergen in Norway. Since such a knitted jacket, with buttons in the front, is called a kofte in Norwegien, a jacket to this pattern (with variations) is called a Fanakofte.

So Ingeborg’s mast now has her own fanakofte...

    Cheers,
    Arne

    Now now children!

By the way Arne, did you knit that lovely jacket? If so, I am very impressed. I believe that in the old days of sail, it was not unusual for the old sailors to knit as a pastime. Perhaps you are maintaining a long tradition.

...never heard the phrase "my side or yours?" ?

...If that mast is a showstopper, then...

    Annie,

the fact that you cannot live with a mast between the v-berths, should not be made into general rule for everyone. I have only slept a couple of dozen times in the forepeak of my junk-rigged boats, but that has never been a problem as long as the masts were dry and not cold. My spruce masts were just fine in this respect.

But not everyone sleeps alone, Arne ;-)

Now, with Ingeborg’s ice-cold aluminium mast, something had to be done. I soon wrapped it with two layers of bubble plastic and then stitched on a jacket of PVC. Only yesterday did I add a knitted woollen jacket on top of this. This made a big difference. That mast will surely not rob my sleep.

    Cheers, Arne

The boat rang loud bells and sure enough, is being sold by a JRA member (whose membership has lapsed).  There would be the classic dilemma of the mast possibly interfering with the V-berth, but put slightly off centre, you might be able to squeeze it into the heads compartment!

Ok Kiwi's that love wood boats.  Here is a beauty, just waiting to be converted.  I think Rivale may have been mentioned in a JRA forum post a couple years ago when she was last for sale as a excellent prospect for JR.  Looks like the couple that bought her have done some nice cosmetic work on her too.  At an asking price of $16K, she has to be worth a look.  Reading the advert, looks like she was replanked not too long ago.
