I post weekly YouTube updates of my build, have a blog, Instagram account and run on Patreon, and I'm afraid, in my opinion, none of them will garner significant public interest unless you have some angle that will 'speak' to the public (or those of them that have any interest in boatbuilding projects). They also involve a lot of work in keeping them going.

Video editing is hard and time consuming. I enjoy yours Tony and missed this weeks video (of course there may be nothing to show if you are not home). Those with even modest youtube success (50k views per video), seem to spend a day editing per video. So promotion takes time.

However, I'm inclined to think that being a school-based project might be what you need to interest people, if you get the word out there as suggested. Good luck with your project.

School based also gives you the possibility of someone with "free" time to do promoting and at the same time learning something from it (maybe a business or entrepreneur class). It is also well to remember that people give up rather quickly and any kind of social media requires scheduled output so that people get the idea a project is still alive.

    Good luck with your programme.

I recognised your "avatar" as the little triloboat Corncrake  for which I believe Arne designed the rig. How has she worked out?

    David and Scott,

Yes, you both suggest youtube updates.  I think you are right.  I will get on that, thank you!

as far as kickstarter, we are committed until the project succeeds or fails in 26 days!

From what I've seen, those weekly update things are the key.  Does your school have an audio/video production class?  Teaming up with them to create a YouTube channel of the build might generate the kind of interest you're seeking.

    Hello David,

Take a look at https://www.patreon.com/sampsonboatco , where Leo Goolden is being very successful in funding the rebuild of the historic yacht Tally Ho. I think his success is due to him issuing video updates every two weeks, and after a hesitant start, he is now getting very good at presenting and explaining what he is doing. Of course, he has Facebook and Instagram presence as well as the Patreon site. I see you've got a similar thing going on Kickstarter, but is that the better platform to work with?

    Hi All,

I want to let you all know about a great new direction I am taking this year.

I have gotten involved with a small private high school here in the mountains of Virginia where I live.  I am guiding a group of teens through the process of building a 22' sailboat. Its a design I modified from a boat of Phil Bolger's.

Anyway, besides building the boat, which the kids are doing great with, I am teaching math and science class that uses sailboat modeling as a kind of focus for project based learning.

This is the first time in my life I have ever had a job doing something I am passionate about.

However, our boat is half done and we are about to run out of materials money.

I have started a kickstarter to try to make up this gap.

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/springship/springship?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=springship

Does anyone have any advice for me on how to get the word out about this project?

    Thanks,

    David Reece
