    Yes, Phil,
    The boltrope is an essential structural member of any original JR. I surely don't claim to have invented it  -  I just make use of it in my cambered panel sails. The first flat JR I had (Malena, 1990), managed without a boltrope as the whole sail shared the vertical loads. However, the drawback was lack of drive, and also some annoying fluttering of the (luff and ) leech, at times.

    First post so hello everyone!

    Here is some more information about this boat:

    Ken Preston has a very nice blog about his travels in Vietnam and his big interest are Vietnamese boats. Last year he had the chance to sail this newly built traditional fishing junk, maybe the only one in the country.

    In the Blue Book from the JRA library this type is called VTAC-2 and was chosen as the best model for the prototype Commando Junk at the end of the book.

    Mr Preston has published an article about this boat in the Wooden Boat Magazine last summer.
