And with any luck, something even nicer will turn up before the end of the year :-)

Albin Vega purchase is not going to happen at this time. Just not the right time for a purchase. Boat is 500 miles away and cost of transport an dry stoorage in that area would not make financial sense at this time as I would not be able to even start to work on the boat until at least december. The boat has been listed before and has not sold and still may be for sale come december, so who knows.

    Hi Keith and welcome aboard.

I have just converted my 26 ft Raven class to a junk rig.  I am so pleased with it and although a bit daunting, it took time, care and patience rather than skill, which is just as well as my skills are limited.  I know the Vega well, too - grand little ships.

Lake sailing just doesn`t interest me. If I was going to stay here for the long time then that might change. Hopefully this coming winter/spring I will be setting off thru the Bahams/Florida Florida Keys. Occassionaly I do crew on few boats for races locally.

    Keith

The Albin Vega is quite common in my waters. I used to own a little-sister of her, the 23’ Albin Viggen, "Malena" for nearly 18 years. Their hull shapes are very similar, but while the Vega kept her integral keel-rudder, the Viggen had its underbody reworked after about 300 boats sold (known as Karskrona Viggen), so my Malena had a fin keel and separate rudder.

I think the Vega is a great boat that will be happy with a junk rig. The only challenge I see is that her rudder authority is not quite as it should be with the rudder tucked that far forward. If "your" Vega still has the inboard engine, then there is room for fitting a new outboard rudder at her stern. That would be easy to fit and would also make the boat more controllable in reverse than they are now. The present rudder could just be left where it is. You just keep it locked and then you have a reserve rudder in hot stand by. The Vega is reasonably good to windward and can be really fast on a reach and run. Good Luck!

PS: Look up Newsletter 55, p.17 to see how owners have added a rudder to the Tur 80, another Per Brohall design. Btw. Per Brohall (1917 - 1989) was Swedish, not Norwegian.

Good to hear that a Vega has been converted! Will help alot if I decide to go that route. Still trying to set up an inspection time in the next few days as the boat is in St Augustine, FL. Gonna be a long drive for a boat inspection so I`m trying to arrange a few more in the area to make the trip worth the time. Of course if its  the right boat any length trip is worth the time and money. Wish me luck!

    Hi Keith, and welcome.
We have two Vega 27's, junk rigged, in the JRA,  owned by John McDonagh and Bo Starborg. I'm sure they'll be happy to tell you about their boats.

    Hello!

Another new US member signing in to JRA. I have never sailed or owned a junk rigged boat, but plan to convert a boat when I finally decide on which boat to buy. My last boat about 10 or so years ago was a Cal 29 and it served me well as a greenhorn with no sailing experience proir to purchase. I lived aboard and sailed for 2 years around the Florida Keys.

Still waiting on my copy of PJR to arrive so I can learn all I can and see what is all involved in a rig conveurrently have my eye on a Albin Vega 27 for sale and will be going for an inspection in the next few days.
