So in gutting Mudita, I'm having to make decisions that I didn't foresee, mostly because opportunity arises when you've got the whole beast open.
I'm seriously considering removing the pedestal and wheel and replacing with a tiller. I like the simplicity of a tiller; fewer things to break; easier to rig self-steering options, and opens up the cockpit when at anchor.
However, I'm concerned about the loss of mechanical advantage should the new rig turn out to have a heavy helm at various points of sail. Actually, I'm worried about the helm issue no matter what. Without headsails or a mizzen, what really can be done if I end up with poor behavior?
The rudder is not balanced, though it's a decent size on its skeg. I don't relish the idea of fighting a tiller with high weather helm every time the wind gets up or I need to run off a bit. Are these valid concerns?
