    Thanks Annie,

Yeah, there have been a few stumbles in my sailing career. Was it you or Lynn Pardey who wrote that the best time to go cruising is when the kids are grown and independent (are they ever?) but before ones parents are old enough to need care.

Nobody quite explained what to do when the venn diagram of kids and parents needing support merged. I inadvertently discovered a zone where they both need care.

The best time to go cruising is NOW. But I have cruised twice with kids. With the two children from my first marriage I spent several years cruising the Pacific when they were 10 and 8 years of age at the middle of that time. Now almost 30 years later they still talk of the experiences they enjoyed while cruising back then. Then I did it again with the daughter of my second marriage, and she really enjoyed the experience and still refers back to it. Now that I have an elderly mother in law who is needful it is more difficult to escape. But too many people find excuses not to go and have adventures, so regardless of the situation onshore, there comes a time when you have just got to go. If you keep putting it off you may never go.

I do remember a slightly humorous situation 8 years ago when we were prepping our junk rig yacht for our voyage to New Caledonia. While we were doing the Cat 1 inspection, and making conversation talking about offshore cruising the inspector threw in the comment; "yeah, it has something you have got to do before you turn sixty", I think he was a bit floored and certainly quiet for a while when I replied; 'I am sixty". I was obviously too old for the offshore sailing game!

Congratulation, Matt.  It's been a long, tough haul for you to get a junk-rigged boat, I know.  Summer's here and you can go and have fun.  Fantastic!

Now we just need to get a junk rig on Graham's new boat.  Is such a shame that he hasn't got more junkie neighbours to help him with the heavy lifting.  We are lucky in NZ to have most of our junks in a fairly small geographical area so that we can help each other when necessary.

But I'm super excited to move aboard Blue Moon, and Graham has been extremely helpful.

THIS time, many more of my ducks are in a row than last time.

Graham plans to sail his new boat northward, so he and I will get some time to cruise in company. And he knows that if he wants to convert his new boat to JR I'll be around for any help I can offer.

Maybe I'll even cross the ditch and come and play with the NZ JR enclave some day.

I have the great pleasure of being Blue Moon's new owner.

JRA Member (legend, really) Graham Cox sold her to me a couple of weeks ago and I'll take formal possession of her in a few weeks.

I had been gathering stuff for converting another boat to JR, but now I don't need to. Thus, I have a bunch of JR stuff for sale, including the mast and the custom SS partners.

Here's a link to the ad I put in the Swap, Sell or Buy section.

I'm very excited to go voyaging in Blue Moon, and to be shown the ropes by such an accomplished JR expert.
