New England, USA Junket, being planned for September 8 – 10, 2017. All are invited!

The gathering will take place in the cove at Holbrook Island, outside of Castine, Maine, in Penobscot Bay. This is a well protected anchorage with good holding, a few first-come/first-served moorings, and peaceful wooded shoreline with public-access trails and well-maintained dinghy docks/floats. Just around the corner is the town of Castine and its harbor, with rental slips, moorings, restaurants, and the various other benefits of town.

We can get together for a day, or a weekend, for visiting, and for sailing on the gorgeous waters of upper Penobscot Bay. All are welcome!

If you might be interested, please contact me – your JRA "Committee Member without Portfolio" –  by replying here, or via e-mail at mwp1@junkrigassociation.org, and I will keep you updated with developments. Please feel free to pass this invitation along to whomever you think might be interested. This is not an "official" JRA event, but a gathering of like-minded friends, from within and outside of our organization here. There are no fees, and we are each, of course, responsible for our own well-being on and off the water.

Hoping to see a good crowd!

    Shemaya

PS For those who are on Facebook, some of the organizing for this junket is going on in the relatively new junk rig Facebook group, International Junk Rig: Sailing Old and New, found here.

May I suggest that it would be helpful if you put the dates of the Junket in the title?

I hear from Shemaya that she's getting quite a lot of interest in her junket: three definites and four serious maybes, plus a few hovering around still wondering.

The venue sounds wonderful, with dinghy docks, wharves, islands, sheltered harbours, shops and restaurants aplenty.  I can see it becoming a week long junket as the boats sail in company, exploring what looks like a most delightful mini cruising ground.  If anyone can get there, I'd recommend it.  I wish I could join in!!  (And by September, the fog should have gone.)

The junket has been rescheduled to the weekend of the Sept 15th-17th. Shemaya has been contacting with folks who have expressed interest about this change of dates. Same beautiful and interesting location. The harbor is mostly surrounded by a 1300 acre sanctuary on both the island and mainland.  There's only one house and a fish shack visible down at on one end. Castine, strategically located south of the mouth of the Penobscot River has a storied history. It changed hand numerous times, occupied by the French, Dutch, British, and Colonists. There are the remains of two or three forts. It is also the home to Maine Maritime academy with their training ship State of Maine and their schooner and arctic voyager, the Bowdoin. Fog is even lees likely.

It sounds like you have every chance of enjoying a wonderful junket.  I wish I could be there, too.

Thank you so much Phil, for updating the junket information – as I've been off sailing (some excuse!) Annie, we sure do wish you could be here too – wouldn't that be special!

As Phil said, the date question is developing into a solid plan for September 15-17, with possible getting together during the week before that, starting with the weekend of September 8-10, so as to be able to include a couple of folks who have said that they cannot come on the later date. Most folks who responded preferred the later date, and some could only come at that time.

There is an e-mail list where much of this planning is going on – anybody who would like to be added to the e-mail list, just let me know, either here, or by sending an e-mail to me at mwp1@junkrigassociation.org

It's great to see folks planning to come – looking forward to it!

Shemaya, you and Phil are both very kind.  Good to hear that you've been off sailing - that's what we like to hear!  Your junket sounds as though it's going to be well-attended - I hope this will be the start of regular get-togethers in New England.  It's wonderful to hear that there's a group of junkies in touch with each other there.  It really does add an extra dimension of pleasure in one's own junk, to sail in company with others.

Thanks so much, Annie! Now that Phil set up that nice entry with the new dates, I expect that I should take this one down – which would be easy, except for erasing your nice post! You're right about less fog in September, and a nice bit of wind rather than all those August calms. Quite exciting that it's actually getting closer.
